Gane Sets Up Title Defence of Al Ain International2 min read

Posted on: 30th Jan 2019

Chris Gane (PGA of GB&I) has taken the lead heading into the final round of the Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club International Pro-Am, supported by Abu Dhabi Sports Council.

Four players were tied for the lead entering the third round of the Pro-Am but following a windy start, Gane snatched the outright lead thanks to a four-under (66) third round, placing him two shots clear of Guillaume Watremez (PGA of Belgium) and Alex Wrigley (PGA of GB&I) entering the final round.

“I played pretty good the first two days, but today I holed a few more putts and the wind was down today so it was a bit more scorable,” said the defending champion after his round at Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club (AESGC), UAE. “There are some good players and there have been some other good scores out there today so we will see what happens tomorrow.

“Every year at Al Ain has been fantastic. The greens are like a carpet, they don’t seem to scuff up during the day and the condition of the course is really brilliant.”

Wrigley, who led the tournament after Round 01 but dropped back by four shots after round two, fought back today to also produce a 66, placing him in tied-second – only two shots behind and well within reach of claiming the title that Gane had denied him in a play-off last year.

Watremez also shares second place at two-under par (208) having gradually improved his scores every day, whilst in fourth place, a steady Henrik Engdahl (PGA of Greece) has consistently shot level-par each round for a 210 total.

In the 54-hole Team Pro-Am event, Team Dooley, led by PGA of GB&I Professional, Steve Dooley, together with amateur teammates, Manfred Engstler, Alfred Velharticky, and Claudia Stritecky, claimed the title with a total score of 255 stableford points (-39).

Team Engdahl finished second with 249 points (-33) followed by Team Watremez in third with 244 points (-28).
