The Open Championship – Patron

HSBC is a Patron of The Open Championship, one of the world’s preeminent golf tournaments and one of the four golfing Majors.

Our partnership with The Royal & Ancient forms the centrepiece of HSBC’s global golf portfolio.  Based in St Andrews, The R&A is golf’s governing body (excluding the USA and Mexico) and the organiser of The Open Championship.  The R&A acts on behalf of over 30 million golfers in 126 countries, with the consent of 141 organisations from the amateur and professional game.
In conjunction with The R&A, HSBC has partnered with The Golf Foundation in the UK to sponsor the HSBC Golf Roots programme.  This is now the largest and most successful junior golf development project in the British Isles. It targets potential players in urban and inner city areas and uses golf as a basis to foster ‘Skills for Life’, such as honesty and respect.

The Golf Foundation is a registered charity that aims to make it possible for all children and young people to access the sport regardless of their background or circumstance.  It aims to reach one million children per year through the programme.
