Imagery - The Minds Eye is the Window to the Future
Imagery has been defined as using all the senses to re-create an experience in the mind to enhance performance. Unfortunately, a common error is the belief imagery can only be used to improve swing technique. However, imagery can also be used to develop performance in a vast number of areas. One such area is the ability to control anxiety.
An individual’s awareness of their ‘optimal level of arousal’ is an important aspect of performance in any sport. Although some players “psyche themselves up” to improve performance the vast majority of golfers will require imagery for anxiety reduction. The ability to control ones-self creating the ‘optimal level of arousal’ influences both the heart and respiration rates and are without doubt major factors in enhanced performance. By mentally re-visiting successful past performances or alternatively by creating scenes coping with heightened levels of nervousness, it is possible to control anxiety. This will result in both mental and physical relaxation. By the utilisation of player-specific scenes and strategies, golfers’ will develop a better insight into themselves and the situations and emotional states in which they perform best.
Without a doubt imagery is a fascinating device for developing personal control. And although, (like any facet of golf) practice is needed, its applications are only limited by our imagination and creativity.
