Coles Storms to Second Beko Classic Title

PGAs of Europe - 2013 Beko Classic - Coles Storms to Second Beko Classic TitleEngland’s Robert Coles capped off a stormy and turbulent week at the 2013 Beko Classic with a second-round, course-record, 64 (-8) that together with his first round left him two ahead of the competition with a -12 total (132) at Gloria Golf Club in Belek, Turkey.

In a second round that spanned two days due to severe weather and delays during Round 2, Coles managed to take advantage of his tied-5th position going into the final round and finish on top to take home the winner’s cheque for $8,000, and his second Beko Classic title having won in 2009 at Antalya Golf Club.

Round 1’s conditions were representative of standard Turkish weather, however, severe lightening storms and downpours caused rain delays on day two of the tournament and subsequently a shortening of the tournament to two rounds as opposed to the scheduled three.

Coles had only hit two shots at the first hole of his second round when play was halted, but came out the following day knowing he had to attack the course to move up the leaderboard:

“It feels fantastic to win, I was lucky enough to win a few years ago, so to come back and win it again is really nice,” explained Coles. “I started off really well on the New Course – started off slowly but managed to get it going and finished off ok. I had a good draw really – I was 09:50am the second day, which was obviously quote late and meant I didn’t have to play too many…when I returned I could not believe how good the drainage was on the golf course…we played today and the sun was out and it was a dry golf course.

“Whenever you come back and you start on the golf course mid-way round you’re always a bit apprehensive about getting off to a decent start…we all knew it was a two-round tournament and we needed to have a good day. I’ve not had the best of years so this is great way to finish and I’m delighted with it really,” he added.

Round 1’s play went without a hiccup and superb 66s from Welshman, Rhys Enoch, and England’s Ryder Cup star, Paul Broadhurst, left them atop the leaderboard overnight as forecasts of heavy rain became evident.

Broadhurst continued his fine form, carding a second round, four-under 68 two finish at tied-second on ten-under par (134) alongside fellow countrymen Jamie Elson and Andrew Marshall, both of whom carded second round five-under par 67s.

2011 Open Champion, Darren Clarke, also made a bid for the title but not even a second round fiver-under par 67 was enough to catch Coles, as Clarke finished on a nine-under par 135 total for the week in fifth place.

Early leader Enoch looked to chase but a triple-bogey on the 8th of Gloria’s New Course was enough to thwart his efforts as he finished on two-under par for the day and in sixth position on eight-under par (136) for the tournament.

The tournament’s Pro-Am honours were taken by Bona Team with a nett -40 (124 + 124 = 248) that gave them a four-shot advantage at the top of the leaderboard having been aided by England’s Ben Mason in Round 1 and Rhys Enoch in Round 2.

Clarke and Daly Bring Major Attraction to Beko Classic

PGAs of Europe - Darren Clarke and John Daly Beko Classic

Major Champions Darren Clarke and John Daly have been confirmed to compete in the 2013 Beko Classic, which will take place at Gloria Golf Club in southern Turkey from November 21st to 23rd.

A new challenge awaits the players at Gloria GC, where each will be playing in their second Beko Classic, with Daly having first played in 2010, and Clarke in 2012, of which both tournaments took place at Antalya Golf Club.

2011 Open Champion, Clarke, will be coming off the back of two PGA Tour appearances at the McGladrey Classic in Georgia and the OHL Classic in Mexico, and will be looking to better his tied-12th performance in last year’s tournament.

The five-time Ryder Cup player and two-time non-playing Vice Captain gained a five year exemption from the PGA Tour and is looking to play the required number of tournaments in the US to remain a member, and will make a return in the new year for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February.

Daly, the colourful winner of the 1991 PGA Championship and 1995 Open Championship, makes a return to the Beko Classic after his 15th place in 2010 and will again bring his huge hitting prowess and adventurous attitude to the 54-hole Pro-Am format tournament.

Turkish golf has been on an incredible rise in recent years having played host to the Turkish Airlines World Golf Final at Antalya Golf Club in 2012, and most recently the European Tour’s Turkish Airlines Open by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism at the Montgomerie Maxx Royal, which forms the penultimate part of the Tour’s Final Series in the Race to Dubai.

The 2013 Beko Classic is the 12th PGAs of Europe-sanctioned edition making it the longest running Pro-Am in the Association’s calendar. This, combined with the attendance of big name players such as Clarke and Daly, has undoubtedly played an important part in helping to develop the game throughout the nation.

All Systems Go for Beko

PGAs of Europe - Gloria Golf ClubThe 2013 edition of the PGAs of Europe-endorsed Beko Classic will take place at Gloria Golf Club in Belek, southern Turkey, where players will battle it out for the $80,000 prize fund.

The 54-hole pro-am, taking place from November 21st to 23rd, will be hosted by Gloria Golf Course at the Gloria Serenity Resort, and will see teams from all over Europe compete at the Michel Gayon-design layouts.

The 2012 tournament saw Wales’ Simon Edwards continue his fine Turkish-form with a 10-under par 206 total capturing the $8,000 winner’s cheque, one shot ahead of fellow Welshman, Garry Houston, in a field consisting of a combined seven Ryder Cup appearances, 24 European Tour wins, and 21 Challenge Tour wins between them.

Golf in Turkey has evolved a long way since David Clare, Mustafa Koç and his team at Beko, conceived this groundbreaking pro-am,” said Ian Randell, Chief Executive of the PGAs of Europe. “This will be the 12th time we have supported the Beko Classic and that really speaks volumes about the quality of the event and its ongoing popularity with both its professional and amateur competitors from across the continent.

It Is fantastic that Turkey can now boast a European Tour event; the Turkish Airlines Open, part of the European Tour Final Series, and I am sure that this is in no small part thanks to the exposure to professional golf that the Beko Classic has provided.

Mustafa Koç, Chairman of Koç Holding, said of the event: “As Beko is growing so is our support for the game of golf. I am proud to be associated with the PGAs of Europe and honoured to know that the Beko Classic Pro-Am is the longest running Pro-Am on the popular PGAs of Europe calendar.

This years event is going to be held at the Gloria Golf Resort where many years ago we held the Beko Seniors event on the European Seniors Tour. I have fond memories from that event and after going back to Gloria for this year’s event I am sure it will become a popular venue with all the competitors.

Gloria Golf Club is the largest golf complex in Turkey; with 45 golf holes comprising of the 18-hole `Old Course`, the 18-hole `New Course` and the 9-hole `Verde Course`, as well as the largest practice facilities in Turkey.

BEKO Classic 2012 Review – Welshman Edwards Claims Third BEKO Classic Title

After leading through Round 1 of this year’s BEKO Classic 2012 at Cornelia Golf Club, Turkey, Simon Edwards won his third BEKO Classic title after posting a ten-under par 206 (66, 72, 68).

Edwards set himself up at the beginning of the tournament with a first round score of six-under par, followed up by an understated level-par 72 in Round 2 to ensure he was within touching distance of the top of the final day leaderboard.

PGAs of Europe - BEKO Classic 2012 Review – Welshman Edwards Claims Third BEKO Classic TitleThe Welshman started steadily with birdies at five and seven to go into the back nine at two-under par. A small blip bogey at ten didn’t get him down as he replied with three consecutive birdies. A bogey at fourteen was duly cleared with a birdie at sixteen, and a par-par finish gave Edwards the four-under 68 required to take the tournament by one shot to fellow countryman Garry Houston, whose initial pair of 70s, along with a five-under par 67, left him at nine-under par (207) for the tournament.

Third place fell to Englishman Jamie Little, finishing on an eight-under par total of 208, with a closing four-under 68, just one shot ahead of fourth place Rhys Enoch, the overnight leader who sadly couldn’t capitalise on his move yesterday, finishing with a one-over par 73 to end at six-under (210) for the tournament.

Round of the day undoubtedly goes to past Ryder Cup player Andrew Coltart, whose seven-under par 65 consisted of six birdies, an eagle and sadly a bogey at the final hole, but ensured he earned a place at tie-ninth for the tournament.

Alongside Coltart, Stuart Little crept into the top-10 with a closing four-under 68, also finishing tied with steady sub-par player Zeke Martinez.

BEKO Classic 2012 Review – Team PanpuriThe winners of this year’s Amateur team prize was ‘Panpuri’ made up of Kadir Esen, Fehmi Zorlu, and Zeki Zorlu, with a team score of -48 (384).
