PGA of South Africa Professional, Jamie Gough, has received the 2017 John Jacobs Award for Teaching & Coaching at the PGAs of Europe’s Annual Congress Gala Awards supported by Rolex.

Gough was nominated by his PGA in recognition of his outstanding work across 34 years as a PGA Member and coach, particularly with top-level players on the European Tour; 17 of which are tournament winners.

“It’s a great honour to receive an award like this in the name of John Jacobs,” said Gough after receiving his award at the 2017 Annual Congress Gala Awards Dinner at Costa Navarino in Greece.

“Any time you receive an award from your peers and an award for your teaching is brilliant. PGAs are great institutions – you can go anywhere in the world with your PGA credentials and everybody receives you with open arms, and I’m proud to be involved with it.”

The John Jacobs Award is the PGAs of Europe’s highest coaching accolade and is presented to a PGA Professional who has excelled as a golf coach at all levels of the game, be it with elite or beginner players alike across a number of years.

Previous winners of the award have included Shane Lowry’s coach, Neil Manchip, along with Michael Bannon, coach of Rory McIlroy and Salvador Luna, coach of Sergio Garcia, and coach to seven of the 2016 Ryder Cup Europe Team, Mike Walker.

Gough is known in South Africa for having owned and operated the country’s largest and most successful chain of golf schools. On an international level, he has coached some of the world’s best players, both amateurs and professionals – notably the 2006 South African Eisenhower Team on home turf in Cape Town.

Since then he has worked as a full-time instructor on the European Tour, nurturing and developing players with an average of 30 events across the season including all four Major Championships, World Golf Championships, and the Ryder Cup.

His current squad of players include fellow countrymen, Brandon Stone and Richard Sterne, England’s Andy Sullivan who he worked with closely at the 2016 Ryder Cup Matches at Hazeltine National Golf Club, and China’s Number 1 player, Hao Tong Li, who finished third in the 2017 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.

His work with these top-level players has earned him numerous accolades, including Golf Digest’s No. 1 teacher in South Africa, along with a career client list that has included the likes of Miguel Angel Jimenez, 2018 Ryder Cup Team Europe Captain, Thomas Bjorn, Alex Noren, Jose Maria Olazabal, Anders Hanson, David Howell, Charl Schwartzel, Brett Rumford, Haydn Porteous, George Coetzee and many more.

Gough understands the extreme requirements of tournament golf and as such has developed a method that involves understanding the basics and controlling ball flight to create a swing that repeats under high pressure and can stand the test of the highest level of competition.

“I am very much a structure teacher who believes that the basics of golf are as relevant to a top professional as they are to a beginner,” adds Gough. “Instructors must never lose sight of the fact that a good grip, setup and posture are imperative for all levels of golfer.

John Jacobs was the first to be very observant of ball flight, and for modern day teachers, myself included, this is still so important. I am proud to be mentioned in the same breath as someone like him.”

5-Star Evans Receives Prestigious PGA Professional Award http://www.pgae.com/news/5-star-evans-receives-prestigious-pga-professional-award/ Sun, 07 Jan 2018 17:22:14 +0000 PGAs of Europe http://www.pgae.com/?p=20819 Managing Director and Co-Owner of the Centurion Club, Scott Evans (PGA of GB&I), has been awarded the PGAs of Europe's 2017 5-Star Professional Award...]]>

Managing Director and Co-Owner of the Centurion Club, Scott Evans (PGA of GB&I), has been awarded the 2017 5-Star Professional Award by the PGAs of Europe, in recognition of his outstanding work in various areas of golf.

Evans’ vast experience of working in some of the world’s best golf facilities, including creating the hugely successful Centurion Club, make him a worthy winner of the award that acknowledges those who show the highest standards and achievements in the areas of expertise and activity they have been involved with.

“I am very honoured to receive this award – to be accepted and recognised by your peers and colleagues is everything you work towards,” said Evans in his acceptance speech video shown to guests of the 2017 Annual Congress Gala Awards Dinner supported by Rolex at Costa Navarino in Greece.

“Receiving the award means so much to my family and I – there’s a lot of people to thank from throughout my career, young and old, past and present, who have been a huge help and support – I really accept this on their behalf as much as my own. It’s a tough business we’re in and I just wanted to be tougher than the rest…it comes from Scottish grit, determination and doing the best job that I can.”

Described as a great example for those working in golf management and a consummate professional, Evans joins the outstanding roll of honour that reflects the extreme merits, diversity and international nature of PGAs of Europe 5-Star Professional Winners, which include Ryder Cup Captains and Open Champions since the award began in 1992.

Evans began his career training as a Civil Engineer and carried out his PGA training under the guidance of the much respected former PGA of Great Britain & Ireland Captain, Bill Watson, at Whitecraigs Golf Club until 1990.

He then moved on to work in the USA at the prestigious Tom Weiskopf-designed Troon Golf and Country Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, working alongside Weiskopf himself and also the creator of Troon Golf, Dana Garmany; a move that would prove to be the catalyst for his career in club management.

Evans worked in Arizona for two years, and by 1995 had also worked through the opening stages of Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club with Peter Downie, and Loch Lomond Golf Club with Paul Dellanzo.

In 1996 and at the age of 28 he moved onto Bearwood Lakes Golf Club in the UK where he was responsible for taking the project from the latter stages of construction through to the finished product. It was here he spent 10 years working under Ray Wilson of Southern Golf fame and seeing first hand the construction of some of Europe’s finest golf courses.

Adding another big name club to his CV, Evans moved on to the London Club as General Manager in 2005 where he was instrumental in turning around the fortunes of the club and creating an agreement with the European Tour that ultimately led to its hosting of two London Senior Masters, two European Opens and a World Matchplay Championship.

Moving back to Troon Golf in 2007, he then worked on many new European projects whilst becoming Managing Director of the La Quinta Resort in Marbella, overseeing its renovation whilst introducing the European Seniors Tour Benahavis Senior Masters.

In 2010, Evans continued his journey to where he is now with the development of the Centurion Club just outside London, where he recently received the award from PGAs of Europe Chief Executive, Ian Randell [pictured above, right] and PGAs of Europe Honorary President, George O’Grady CBE [pictured above, left].

Finding a piece of land just 30 minutes from central London was just the first step in a journey that, along with his Dutch business partners Bert Pronk and Andre Hendriks, has led to the creation of a club that is now famed for its forward-thinking approach, including an acclaimed golf course, a unique membership structure and, a modern club culture and facilities – such as a restaurant operated by the Michelin-starred chefs, the Galvin brothers – that are relaxing, comfortable and high quality in equal measure.

The club has also gained international recognition for becoming the venue of the innovative European Tour GolfSixes event that began earlier this year. Centurion has been instrumental in the success of the revolutionary format of two-man teams from 16 different countries that brought over 9,000 spectators through the club’s gates, and also gave it huge exposure to millions of people around the world with its extensive TV coverage.

The development of the club is a great example of the dedication, drive and expertise that Evans has, having overcome many challenges, including the development of a successful and sustainable facility during one of the worst economic periods in our lifetime.

With this exceptional list of facilities and clubs that Evans has poured heart and soul into, he is more than worthy of being named a 5-Star Professional.

5-Star Evans Receives Prestigious PGA Professional Award
Liam Duggan Earns PGAs of Europe ‘President’s Award for Golf Development’ Honour http://www.pgae.com/news/liam-duggan-earns-pgas-of-europe-presidents-award-for-golf-development-honour/ Sat, 06 Jan 2018 14:53:39 +0000 PGAs of Europe http://www.pgae.com/?p=20806 PGA in Ireland Advanced Professional, Liam Duggan, has been posthumously awarded the President’s Award for Golf Development (Individual)...]]>

PGA in Ireland Advanced Professional, Liam Duggan, has been posthumously awarded the President’s Award for Golf Development (Individual) in recognition of his tireless efforts and huge successes in developing golf in schools and promoting inclusivity in Ireland.

Over a period of six years, Liam created an extensive system for golf coaching in schools across Ireland. This allowed thousands of children to access golf that otherwise would not be able to, engaging in a number of projects that created playing opportunities for people of all ages and physical and mental capabilities, all whilst providing employment for many PGA Professionals.

In early 2017, Liam was diagnosed with an extremely rare condition and after a short period of treatment, passed away suddenly at the University Hospital Kerry aged just 37, leaving behind his much loved wife and two children.

Nominated by the PGA in Ireland, Liam was naturally a worthy recipient of the President’s Award for Golf Development, as it aims to acknowledge the work of an individual or specific project that has excelled in developing golf.

Liam began his PGA career in 2003 and graduated with distinction having finished third, first and second out of all the trainees in the PGA of Great Britain & Ireland training programme. After a short time in the United States at Kiawah Island, the global economic climate led to interviewing for dozens of jobs and work outside of the golf industry. With few opportunities within golf arising, he felt it necessary to make his own.

In April 2011, after realising that there was not enough of a focus on juniors within golf in Ireland, Liam founded LDgolf, a freelance coaching service offering tuition in Limerick & Kerry, with a primary focus on junior coaching and development.

Seeing a clear gap in the market, he focused on delivering golf in schools creating fun and safe learning environments and positive experiences and ensuring he taught the fundamentals of golf, life skills and cognitive and affective intelligence.

This opened the floodgates and after only a few years, the programmes were becoming incorporated into the curriculum and there was enough demand that he was able to create a revenue stream and take on two further PGA Professionals.

By the end of 2015, the ‘Rising Star’ programme had 24 PGA Professionals delivering instruction in over 225 schools, to more than 3,000 children each week on average, with pathways established to 32 golf clubs and coaching venues in the country.

The programme showed success with various high performing juniors coming through the system, but also in engaging PGA Professionals that gained the skills necessary to keep employment in the golf industry at a time when many were not able to.

Liam was then able to take his incredible work much further with the development of the CommuniTEE programme that focuses on bringing golf to the 90% of the population that do not have access to the sport, such as school children, the over 60s, those with special needs, and also families, with structured pathways to golf clubs to provide long-term playing opportunities.

He was then a natural fit to work with other organisations such as The First Tee Ireland and their one day “Primary Days” programmes, and with UNESCO Chair at Tralee IT and the co-developed “Let’s Inclusivize Golf” programme focusing on creating opportunities for people with disabilities in golf.

This work also led to engaging with The Els Foundation and the delivery of “Els for Autism” programmes with the Foundation placing a plaque at their headquarters in Florida in tribute to Liam and his work.

Liam’s wife, Catherine [pictured above], was present at the 2017 Annual Congress Gala Awards Dinner at Costa Navarino in Greece to collect the award in recognition of the legacy for golf in Ireland that he has left. PGAs of Europe Honorary President, George O’Grady CBE, presented Catherine with Liam’s award, receiving an emotional and a much-deserved reception from the attending guests.

‘Golf Éducatif’ Programme Recognised With European Golf Development Award http://www.pgae.com/news/golf-educatif-programme-recognised-with-european-golf-development-award/ Fri, 05 Jan 2018 14:18:44 +0000 PGAs of Europe http://www.pgae.com/?p=20790 ‘Golf Éducatif’ has been awarded the 2017 President’s Award for Golf Development (Project) at the Association’s Gala Awards supported by Rolex...]]>

‘Golf Éducatif’ has been awarded the 2017 President’s Award for Golf Development (Project) by the PGAs of Europe at the Association’s Gala Awards supported by Rolex.

The President’s Award for Golf Development acknowledges the work of an individual or specific project that has excelled in developing golf. Since 2003, Golf Éducatif has worked to use golf as an educational tool that promotes the values associated with the game – respect, etiquette, humility, environmental awareness, concentration, and citizenship – to French schoolchildren and adults regardless of their socio-economic background, or physical and mental capabilities.

The Project develops environmental and social awareness and helps people to take responsibility by getting them involved in the construction, development and up-keep of their own golf courses, with well over 20 courses being created across France.

The Project is the brainchild of PGA of GB&I Professional, Bill Owens [pictured below, left], who has led it from its very beginning and received the award at the 2017 Annual Congress at Costa Navarino in Greece from PGAs of Europe Honorary President, George O’Grady CBE [pictured below, right].

“I can’t wait to take this into all the golf courses we have built and I know the pupils are going to be so proud,” said Owens after receiving a standing ovation during the awards ceremony. “This could really help us to build more Golf Éducatif courses all over France. A lot of people said we couldn’t do this but I love that kind of challenge – this is a real rocket that will let an awful lot of people know what we’re going to do with golf and what Golf Éducatif is.

“I see Golf Éducatif as an important educational solution because we’re in a serious situation worrying about the environment. The philosophy that the project works on is that there is 82% of the world’s population living in 18% of the territory…so we have to have an education for children that shows how they get in contact with the environment and we believe they can only do this through a game, and that game is golf. They need the tools to do this and Golf Éducatif can be that tool, and is what education will be about in the future…we have a model that can set an example for the world.”

Owens’ specific teaching method called “Le Geste Naturel”, combined with the use of 30% distance golf balls, enable participants to play in a wide variety of environments such as sports grounds, educational facilities, public parks, derelict and un-used land and the grounds of psychological and physiological health units.

Courses are built so they are adapted to the 30% ball and participants are then able to learn using an “educational golf” teaching formula taught to teachers and educators that creates a multi-disciplinary experience including artistic and creative studies, mathematics, physics, sport, history, and civil instruction.

The programme’s strong environmental focus creates awareness and individual responsibility for the ever-increasing urban population through the re-use of existing, inner-city land, and recycling of golf equipment and any items that are available to participants, such as old tyres to build greens, leftover paint, old building materials and even clothing.

The project has worked tirelessly to place golf in the heart of the education system in France with around 50 teachers or educators being taught every year, each of which is working with around 30 pupils.

Owens presented an overview of the project during the 2017 Annual Congress sessions to representatives of Member Country PGAs showing how the model could be rolled out internationally allowing other countries to also see substantial social, physical and psychological benefits.

Annual Congress & ITC Set New International Standard at Costa Navarino http://www.pgae.com/news/annual-congress-itc-set-new-international-standard-at-costa-navarino/ Mon, 04 Dec 2017 08:00:47 +0000 PGAs of Europe http://www.pgae.com/?p=20613 PGA Leaders and Professionals from 28 PGAs of Europe Member Countries joined together for the 2017 Annual Congress & ITC at Costa Navarino in Greece...]]>

PGA Leaders and Professionals from 28 Member Countries of the PGAs of Europe joined together last week for the 2017 Annual Congress & International Team Championship (ITC) at Costa Navarino in Greece, raising the bar once again for the Association’s flagship event.

The first staging of the events at Costa Navarino in the heart of Greece’s Messinia region proved to be hailed as the best yet by Annual Congress delegates and ITC competitors, with a varied and engaging programme of events, outstanding levels of hospitality, service and cuisine, and world class golf courses enjoyed in excellent weather.

Congress sessions included a wide range of speakers and subject matter, ensuring a strong mix of presentations, discussions and forums, breakout sessions and workshops within each day to keep delegates’ creative juices flowing.

Along with various updates around the PGAs of Europe’s own activities and progress, sessions looked to grow and develop delegate’s own personal and professional activities.

With sessions on golf, personal and member development, speakers focused on areas such as the relationships between national PGAs and Federations, initiatives to grow the game and provision of mentoring and consulting services through the PGAs of Europe Golf Development Team to assist national collaboration with international guidance.

The European Education Level System (EELS), volunteer coaching, women’s golf development with Alastair Spink (PGA of GB&I) of Love.Golf, and academic qualifications available to PGA Professionals added further breadth of subject matter for delegates.

A highlight from the sessions was Thomas International’s Mark Brooks delivering an extensive workshop that shone a light on to attendee’s own working and personal styles, characteristics and behaviours and how this can affect their work with the respective PGAs and organisations.

Mid-way through the week Costa Navarino’s own wellness team delivered a golf stretching session aimed at reinvigorating the delegates and teaching them simple, yet effective exercises that they can use not only for golf but in everyday work and life.

They each then had the opportunity to trial Interleague.golf on The Dunes Course short game area enabling them to trial a new initiative from the PGAs of Europe and GSA Golfsports in the beautiful surrounding environment, followed up by an overview of the successful Golf Foundation and European Tour-led Golf Sixes Academy.

Delegates were also able to sample The Bay Course at Costa Navarino designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. in the President’s Challenge Golf where each were assigned to either the President’s or Chairman’s team and played competitive, but friendly matchplay matches to provide networking opportunities and ensure a balanced time both in and out of the conference room.

The week also included a joint education event with ITC Competitors for the first time with Jamie Gough, PGA of South Africa Professional and coach to players such as Hao Tong Li and Andy Sullivan. The renowned tour coach took part in a Q&A session with PGAs of Europe Education Committee Chairman and friend to Gough, Jonathan Mannie, giving attendees the chance to engage in a thought-provoking and enlightening evening session.

Running simultaneously to the Annual Congress, the 2017 ITC was played out over The Dunes Course at Costa Navarino and saw eventual winners, the PGA in Ireland, race to victory by an incredible 16 shots over the PGA in Scotland and PGA in Holland Teams.

Teams representing PGAs with 100 members or fewer also competed within the ITC event for the International Team Shield, with home country, the PGA of Greece, coming out on top for their first Team Shield win and a notable sixth place finish overall.

The week culminated with the presenting of six Annual Awards at the Gala Dinner Supported by Rolex, which celebrated individuals and organisations deserving of recognition for their work in the sport.

The Congress & ITC events received fantastic support from across the Association’s Corporate Partner family and from further afield. Along with Costa Navarino’s incredible hosting of the week, BMW provided transfer services and test-drives of the latest electric models as Official Vehicle, whilst Aegean Airlines, in their capacity as Official Airline Partner to the events, provided preferential rates to all delegates and competitors, along with invaluable support before and during the week.

The Ryder Cup European Development Trust continued to support the Annual Congress, aiding the facilitation of the week and ensuring the Association’s Member Countries can share knowledge, resources, and experience within the network.

Supporting Partners, The Botanist, The Blue Beetle, Bulldog, and G’Vine gins, together with Fever-Tree Premium Natural Mixers, supported the Welcome Reception with a fantastic gin tasting evening, whilst Marendry apperitivo, provided the pre-Gala Dinner cocktail reception.

The PGA in Ireland cruised to a sensational victory at Costa Navarino in Greece after shooting the lowest International Team Championship (ITC) rounds of the week to take the title by an incredible 16 shots.

Building on their sizable overnight lead of six shots, the PGA in Ireland Team made up of Simon Thornton, David Higgins and Mark Staunton, quickly pulled further clear of the rest of the field.

Delgany Golf Club’s Staunton certainly saved the best till last with a sublime final round 64 (-7), which ensured that the PGA in Ireland would be taking the ITC home for the third time in the Championship’s history.

Simon Thornton provided the other score after signing for a final round 70 (-1), cementing their position at the top of the leaderboard at 19-under par.

Team Captain, David Higgins, said “We’re delighted – it’s fantastic to represent our own PGA and win this prestigious event – we are over the moon. There have been 5-600 guys back home rooting for us and we’ve done the job – we came all the way over here, played great and we’re going home with the trophy so it’s fantastic.”

“A place like this then you’d want to come back week after week,” Thornton added. “Especially in the middle of November, playing in the sun and the golf course being in the condition it is then why would you not want to come back.”

With the winners seemingly untouchable it was between the PGA of Holland, PGA in Scotland, PGA of Italy, PGA in Wales and the PGA of Greece to battle it out for the podium.

The PGA in Wales team moved into the top three midway through the final round however it was the PGA of Holland and PGA in Scotland who eventually shared the honours in tied second position.

The International Team Shield event once again gave those representing a PGA with 100 members or fewer the chance to compete alongside the larger PGAs in the ITC, whilst also enjoying their own competition and prize fund.

The PGA of Greece were able to come out on top having held the lead in the Shield event for the opening three rounds, closing with 72s (1 over par) from Chryssanthos Diakou and Themis Ginis.

The Greek team secured a record sixth place finish in the overall ITC event and their first win in the Shield event:

“I feel very proud to be part of this team – we have accomplished something that has never happened before in Greece,” said Team Captain, Christos Nikopoulos. “We have beaten many PGAs that have a lot of members, so we believe it is very important for the next generation too and we have set the level a bit higher.”

The PGA in Ireland team put themselves in pole position heading into the final round at Costa Navarino after a four under par total for the day (138) moved them onto an overall total of 11-under.

The Irish Team ended the day with a six shot cushion over their nearest challengers the PGA in Scotland, with Waterville Golf Links’ ever-consistent David Higgins shooting his third consecutive under par round.

In cooler conditions, scoring across the field was tough, however after an early bogey, Higgins rallied to fire three birdies in his inward nine holes to sign off for a 69 (-2). This was matched by compatriot Mark Staunton and put the PGA in Ireland in touching distance of another International Team Championship Title.

With Scotland signing for a level par 142 to remain in second place, the PGA of Holland Team closed the gap at third place to just one shot after signing for a third round 141 (-1). Aside from Ireland’s Higgins, Holland’s Ralph Miller is the only other player to shoot three rounds of par or better.

The PGA of Greece matched the excellent scoring of the ITC leaders to jump up the leaderboard and into T4th position, whilst furthering their lead in the International Team Shield to a 16-shot buffer.

With Themis Ginis and Chryssanthos Diakou – both of whom are based at Costa Navarino – their local knowledge and experience paid dividends as they climbed four places and into a share of tied fourth alongside the PGA in Wales.

Ginis carded a superb three under par 68, whist compatriot, Diakou, contributed with an exciting one under par 70. Diakou was five under par through nine holes, however a couple of bogeys and a double bogey saw him settle for a 70 (-1) and pushed the home nation into touching distance of securing their first international Team Shield title.

A tournament low round by PGA in Ireland’s Simon Thornton played a pivotal role in the PGA in Ireland making up ground and taking over as halfway leaders in the 2017 International Team Championship at Costa Navarino in Greece.

Thornton got his team off to a fast start – starting on the 10th hole of The Dunes Course, he produced a flawless three-under par outward nine, setting him up nicely for the inward nine. A further three birdies with just the one solitary blemish on the par-three fifth hole resulted in an excellent 66 (-5).

Contributing to the second round score for the PGA in Ireland was another member of the victorious PGA Cup team – David Higgins. With his second under par round of the tournament with a one-under 70, Higgins was able to move Ireland to the top of the leaderboard with a two-shot cushion over fellow home nation members, Scotland.

A reversal of fortune saw the PGA in Scotland trio drop back into the chasing pack after a combined score of 143 (+1) dropped them back onto a five-under par total of 279 at the halfway point.

The PGA of Italy team made the second biggest move of the day – an excellent inward six-under par 30 by Zeke Martinez contributed to a three-under total for the day and a move into T3 alongside the PGA of Holland; just four off the lead.

The PGA of Greece further cemented their claim in securing their first International Team Shield after a steady level par 71 from Chyssanthos Diakou combined with a 74 by Themis Ginis resulted in their lead being extended to eight shots over nearest challengers, Poland.

Scotland Control the Course at Costa Navarino http://www.pgae.com/news/scotland-control-the-course-at-costa-navarino/ Thu, 23 Nov 2017 00:15:26 +0000 PGAs of Europe http://www.pgae.com/?p=20538 The PGA in Scotland have a 5-shot lead over the field after Round 01 of the 2017 International Team Championship...]]>

PGA in Scotland trio Chris Currie, Greig Hutcheon and Paul McKechnie combined perfectly to open up a commanding five shot lead over the rest of the field after Round 01 of the International Team Championship (ITC) at Costa Navarino in Greece, as they look to go one better then their runner-up position last year.

A strong Scottish team consisting of two members of the victorious 2017 PGA Cup Team linked up perfectly to sit in pole position heading into Round 02 of the Championship.

Matching 68’s by Greig Hutcheon and Paul McKechnie combined to give the leading score (-6, 136), however they were achieved in very different ways.

McKechnie’s four birdies were blotted by one solitary bogey on his way to a 68, however Hutcheon had more of an up-and-down round with his seven birdies being cancelled out by four bogeys.

Holding Tied Second position are the PGA of Ireland and the PGA of Holland whose teams signed for a 141 total (-1) just ahead of the Finnish, English and Italian teams who are tied fourth after opening level par (142) totals.

With the International Team Championship being played in Greece for the first time it is fitting that the host country have got off to a quick start in the International Team Shield.

The PGA of Greece team, consisting of Professionals Themis Ginis, Christos Nikopoulos and Costa Navarino’s very own Chrysanthos Diakou, matched the leading margin of Scotland easing to a five shot lead over the chasing nations with Slovenia currently in second place.

The 2017 Annual Congress & International Team Championship (ITC) begins this week in the beautiful surroundings of Costa Navarino in Greece, with 28 countries represented from across the Association’s Member PGAs.

The Annual Congress is the yearly opportunity for PGA representatives, as well as leaders from various golfing organisations from across the continent, to meet and discuss the state of play within their respective territories, as well as learn, share and discuss ideas with each other alongside fantastic speakers from not only the world of golf but wider industries as well.

Delegates will take part in a variety of sessions, across the week including focus areas such as golf development and various initiatives, female participation, local and international collaboration between golfing bodies, along with health and wellbeing and business and personal performance to continually improve the delegates and the PGAs they oversee.

ITC Competitors will join together with Delegates for a special Q&A session with PGA of South Africa Professional, Jamie Gough; the world-renowned coach to players such as Hao Tong LiAndy SullivanMiguel Angel JimenezThomas Bjorn, and Alex Noren.

Running at the same time as the Congress, the ITC pits PGA Professionals from 21 countries against each other on The Dunes Course at Costa Navarino.

The Professionals will compete over 72-holes in teams of three with the best two scores counting towards their total for the ITC honours. The PGA of Germany will be looking to repeat their 2016 Championship win, but a wide variety of countries with strong teams will be vying for the top spot and Championship title.

Those Teams representing a PGA with 100 members or fewer will also be in the running for the International Team Shield that ensures the small and emerging Member PGAs of the Association can compete alongside the larger PGAs in the ITC, whilst also enjoying their own competition and prize fund.

The week culminates with the 2017 Annual Gala Awards Dinner Supported by Rolex that sees the presentation of various awards to outstanding individuals and organisations, throwing a spotlight on their efforts and work that have benefitted the sport.

International Support Secures Congress & ITC Success http://www.pgae.com/news/international-support-secures-congress-itc-success/ Mon, 20 Nov 2017 20:42:35 +0000 PGAs of Europe http://www.pgae.com/?p=20509 The 2017 PGAs of Europe Annual Congress & International Team Championship (ITC) will receive record levels of support from across the Association’s Partners...]]>

The 2017 PGAs of Europe Annual Congress and International Team Championship (ITC) will be receiving record levels of support from across the Association’s Partners.

The flagship week will be hosted by IAGTO’s ‘European Golf Resort of the Year 2017’, Costa Navarino, in the Messinia region of Greece and will see representatives from across the PGAs of Europe Member Countries join together alongside ITC PGA Professional competitors.

The week’s continued success could not be achieved without the support of all of the Association’s Partners, and in particular, those that directly support the Annual Congress and ITC.

Much of the development of golf in Greece can be attributed to the 2017 Skytrax World Airline Awards ‘Best Regional Airline in Europe’, Aegean Airlines, who are the Official Airline Partner of the Annual Congress & ITC.

The Star Alliance Member airline have continued to promote the benefits of golf across the Aegean region for both tourism and the wellbeing of its people in general, creating the hugely popular Aegean Airlines Pro-Am, supporting the local PGA of Greece, and encouraging golf travel with free of charge carriage of golf bags and equipment.

“The time has come to host in Greece and in the splendid golf resort of Costa Navarino, the Annual Congress and the ITC of the PGAs of Europe,” said Chairman of Aegean Airlines, Mr. Theodore Vassilakis. “Since 2010, the role of Aegean Airlines has been to bring together our two strategic and significant partners in the golf market in the shape of Costa Navarino and the PGAs of Europe, and we are so proud that we have contributed with our means.”

Mobility throughout the week for delegates and competitors will be provided by Corporate Partner and Official Vehicle, BMW.

The German automobile manufacturer recently extended their Corporate Partnership with the PGAs of Europe that includes their supporting of the Congress and ITC week with transfer services to and from the venue and test drives in top of the range BMW models such as the innovative, all-electric BMW i3 and the future of the sports vehicle, the BMW i8.

The Ryder Cup European Development Trust have continued to support the Annual Congress since 2003, aiding the facilitation of the week and ensuring the Association’s Member Countries can share knowledge, resources, and experience within the network.

The week culminates with the Annual Gala Awards that see key individuals, organisations and PGA Professionals recognised for their achievements and efforts in golf, and will once again be supported by Swiss watch brand, Rolex.

The Awards will also be assisted by Supporting Partners, Marendry apperitivo, who will facilitate the pre-dinner cocktail reception, whilst The Botanist, The Blue Beetle, Bulldog, and G’Vine gins, together with Fever-Tree Premium Natural Mixers, will support the Welcome Reception that gets the week’s events underway in style.

Costa Navarino in Greece will play host to the 2017 PGAs of Europe Annual Congress and International Team Championship (ITC) for the first time as the events take place from 22-25 November.

The hosting of the Association’s flagship event continues the successful relationship between the PGAs of Europe and the prime sustainable destination in the Mediterranean that currently includes sanctioning of their Messinia Pro-Am and regularly hosting the Aegean Airlines Pro-Am.

“We are extremely excited to be able to take two of our key events to Costa Navarino and bring them fully into our Corporate Partner family,” said PGAs of Europe Chief Executive, Ian Randell.

“We have been visiting them since their formation and it is a stunning venue with two first class golf courses. Costa Navarino has quickly become established as one of Europe’s, if not the world’s, leading golf destinations. We are proud to be showcasing this superb destination and its facilities to leaders of our National PGAs and the competitors who have qualified to represent their PGAs in the ITC.”

“We are honoured that Costa Navarino has been chosen to host the PGAs of Europe’s flagship event and we look forward to welcoming the Association in the region of Messinia,” said Stephanos Theodorides, Managing Director and Vice Chairman of TEMES S.A. – Developers of Costa Navarino.

“A combination of perfect weather year-round, two award-winning golf courses by the sea, high-quality facilities and authentic experiences, Costa Navarino, chosen by IAGTO as “European Golf Resort of the Year 2017”, is fast becoming a leading golf destination to enjoy in every season.”

The Annual Congress is the Association’s yearly opportunity to bring representatives from its 35 Member Country PGAs together under one roof, facilitating meetings, discussions and workshops to share ideas, progress and various ways they can advance their organisations and golf in their respective territories.

The ITC then runs alongside the Congress in which teams from across the Association’s Member Countries compete over 72 holes on The Dunes Course, designed by Bernhard Langer. The best two individual scores each day from the team of three will count towards the overall team score, and a secondary event sees small and emerging Member PGAs compete for the ITC Shield.

The Westin Resort Costa Navarino will act as the base for both events, concluding with the Gala Awards Dinner supported by Rolex, bringing Congress delegates and ITC competitors together in celebration of the annual award winners and the ITC Champions.

The PGA of Great Britain & Ireland’s Matthew Cort completed a leading performance at Quinta do Lago in Portugal, with a -10 total to take The Invitational Pro-Am 2017 honours.

Cort held the lead in all three rounds of the event and closed with another two-under par 70 on the South Course at Quinta do Lago finishing two shots ahead of second place at -10 (206).

“I am thrilled to win…we’ve played three great courses this week and we’ve been so well looked after,” said the member of the victorious PGA of GB&I PGA Cup team. “I’ve been busy playing throughout the summer and the PGA Cup was unbelievable…I was settling down for a bit of a winter break, but coming out here and keeping the game together was good, so I’m really pleased to win this week.”

Rising seven places up the leaderboard into second position was the PGA of France’s Julien Gressier after a four-under 68 consisting of seven birdies and three bogeys for his eight-under total (208).

Just one shot back was PGA EuroPro Tour Professional, John Henry, who closed his consistent week with a level par 72 and a total of seven-under (209) for sole third place.

The Team Pro-Am was won by the PGA of Italy’s Emanuele Canonica and his partner, Allegra Mangifesta. A closing 59 (-13), the low round of the day, gave Canonica and Mangifesta a significant boost to -35 (181), five shots ahead of second place.

Robbie Busher (PGA EuroPro Tour) and Dale Brennan had led overnight and were able to make a final 66 (-6). Whilst it wasn’t enough to catch the ultimate winners, they were able to finish on a hugely respectable -30 (186).

Third position went to the pairs of PGA of Spain Professional, Peter Gustafsson, and Gordana Solak, and former Walker Cup player, Owen Edwards, and Paul Faithfull both with 193 points (-23).

De Filippi & Cort Command Leaderboard at Quinta do Lago http://www.pgae.com/news/de-filippi-cort-command-leaderboard-at-quinta-do-lago/ Fri, 03 Nov 2017 19:58:24 +0000 PGAs of Europe http://www.pgae.com/?p=20403 Italy's Giorgio De Filippi and GB&I's Matt Cort share the lead at The Invitational Pro-Am heading into the final round...]]>

Giorgio De Filippi, and PGA of Great Britain & Ireland Professional, Matt Cort, share the Round 02 lead at Eligo Club’s ‘The Invitational Pro-Am 2017’ at Quinta do Lago in Portugal.

Whilst De Filippi’s second round might not have had the fireworks of his first 18 holes, it was another show of great play as the Italian picked up five birdies in his opening 12 holes. Two bogeys coming back home meant the round was not enough to claim the sole lead, but a three-under par 69 for a n eight under (136) total gives him every chance at victory in the final round.

Overnight leader, Cort, also carded two bogeys, however his fast start of three birdies in the first four holes, followed by another at the par-5 15th allowed him to return a two-under 70 and keep his share of the lead.

PGA of GB&I Professional, Garry Gilligan, 2014 Ryder Cup Team Europe Captain, Paul McGinley, and PGA EuroPro Tour Professional, John Henry, have a share of third place after their respective rounds of 67, 68 and 70 see them just one shot off the lead at seven-under par (137).

Round 01 Team leaders, Robbie Busher (PGA EuroPro Tour) and Dale Brennan, continued their top form with a betterball 59 (-13) for a total of -24 (120) and a two shot lead over the chasing field.

However the low Team Pro-Am round of the day came from the PGA of Italy’s Emanuele Canonica and his partner, Allegra Mangifesta, with a -15 57 that saw them climb six places to -22 (122).

Colm Moriarty (PGA of GB&I) and Daphne Fagan were also able to break the 60-barrier with a combined 59 for outright third place at -20 (124).

England’s Matt Cort (PGA of Great Britain & Ireland) had the ideal start in Round 01 of The Invitational Pro-Am 2017 in Portugal with an opening six-under par 66.

Starting out on the North Course at the renowned Quinta do Lago resort in the Algarve, Cort made steady headway with three birdies out and three birdies in for the low round of the day.

PGA EuroPro Tour Professional, John Henry, and PGA of Italy Professional, Giorgio de Filippi, both sit just one shot back after both using eagles to their advantage for their five-under par 67s. Henry eagled the par 5 11th hole, whilst de Filippi also eagled the 11th along with the seventh as well.

Mark Mouland (European Seniors Tour) and Stephen McAllister (PGA of GB&I) sit in tie-fourth on four-under, whilst 2014 Ryder Cup Team Europe Captain, Paul McGinley, and England’s Sam Little share sixth place on three-under.

Robbie Busher (PGA EuroPro Tour) and amateur partner, Dale Brennan, have the team lead after an excellent 11-under par 61

John Henry’s solid play, combined with his partner, Robert Christie, earned a share of second in the team event with Challenge Tour Professional Ben Stow and his partner Michael Johnson, each on nine-under par (63).

Selection Criteria Set for 2018 Junior Ryder Cup European Team http://www.pgae.com/news/selection-criteria-set-for-2018-junior-ryder-cup-european-team/ Tue, 31 Oct 2017 10:59:27 +0000 PGAs of Europe http://www.pgae.com/?p=20355 The selection criteria for Team Europe have been confirmed for the 2018 Junior Ryder Cup, which will take place at Disneyland Paris®, on September 24-25...]]>

The selection criteria for Team Europe have been confirmed for the 2018 Junior Ryder Cup, which will take place at Disneyland Paris®, on September 24-25.

The European Team will again comprise 12 amateur players – six boys and six girls – from any European Golf Association member country who are under the age of 18 as of January 1, 2018. In order to qualify, players cannot be members of a US college golf team as of the first day of the match.

The European Captain, Maïtena Alsuguren, has, with the assistance of the EGA and Ryder Cup Europe, identified the selection system based on an analysis of the important tournaments and championships in which the best European juniors will compete in during the lead-up to the Junior Ryder Cup team announcement on August 20, 2018.

The team will be selected by Alsuguren, who will be supported by a selection committee made up of representatives from Ryder Cup Europe and the EGA.

The Boys’ Amateur Champion and the Girls’ British Open Amateur Champion, if both eligible, will be automatically selected. The captain and the selection committee will take particular note of performances in the following events:

Boys:

 • The Amateur championship, Royal Aberdeen and Murcar Links, Scotland, 18 – 23 Jun
 • European Amateur Championship, Royal Hague Golf & Country Club, Netherlands, 27 – 30 Jun
 • European Boys’ Team Championship, Golf Resort Kaskada Brno, Czech Republic, 10 – 14 Jul
 • European Amateur Team Championship, Faldo Course Berlin in A-ROSA Sharmützelsee, Germany, 10 – 14 Jul
 • The Boys’ Amateur (champion gains automatic selection), Royal Portrush and Portstewart, Wales, 14 – 19 Aug

Girls:

 • Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championship, Hillside, Southport, England, 26 – 30 Jun
 • European Girls’ Team Championship, Forsgårdens Golfklubb, Sweden, 10 – 14 Jul
 • European Ladies’ Amateur Team Championship, Golf Club Murhof, Austria, 10 – 14 Jul
 • European Ladies’ Amateur Championship, Penati Golf Resort – Heritage Course, Slovakia, 25 – 28 Jul
 • Girls’ British Open Amateur Championship (champion gains automatic selection), Ardglass Golf Club, Northern Ireland, 14 – 18 Aug

In addition, the captain and the selection committee will analyse the results of the best boys and girls ranked in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR) and Women’s World Amateur Golf Rankings (WWAGR).

Selectors will also look at strong performances in national open-level and WAGR/WWAGR Elite, A and B events.

Alsuguren said: “It’s a real honour to captain Europe once again at the Junior Ryder Cup. Now that the qualifying events have been finalised, I am starting to get excited about seeing the team take shape next year.

“The standard of both male and female junior golfers is very high in Europe, and although we may not have a strong recent record, I’m certain that the team we will take to Paris next September will be of the highest quality.”

America has won the last five editions of the Junior Ryder Cup, with Europe’s last victory coming in Ohio, in 2004. The 2006 contest was tied.

The 2018 Junior Ryder Cup will be the tenth staging of the event, which has seen some of the world’s greatest players pass through its ranks. Reigning Masters Tournament champion Sergio Garcia played in the 1995 exhibition match, and, four years later, was a member of Europe’s Ryder Cup Team in Brookline.

Two-time Major winner, Suzann Pettersen, took part in both the 1997 and 1999 editions of the Junior Ryder Cup, while four-time Major champion, Rory McIlroy, formed part of the victorious European side of 2004.

Hunter Mahan, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Lexi Thompson are some of the global stars who have represented the US team.

Next year’s contest will be held at Disneyland Paris® for the first time and entry will be free for all attending.

Lumine Mediterránea Beach & Golf Club will play host to the 2018 Costa Daurada International Pro-Am and the PGAs of Europe Fourball Championship in February next year, creating the Costa Daurada Golf Festival.

From 08 to 11 February, the renowned Spanish club will host the Costa Daurada International Pro-Am with teams of one Professional and three amateurs competing over three rounds, together with a guaranteed prize fund of €20,000 for Professionals.

Directly after, from 12 to 15 February, the PGAs of Europe Fourball Championship Presented by Costa Daurada will see up to 120 pairs of PGA Professionals battle it out across the club’s Hills and Lakes courses in what has become one of the largest Professional tournaments in the world.

Professionals are invited to enter both events* that have joined forces for the second year in a row as the Costa Daurada Golf Festival, celebrating the ongoing successful partnership that Lumine, the PGAs of Europe and the local tourism agencies of the Costa Daurada have forged.

“Having these events together for a second consecutive year really adds strength to them both and proved to be a popular way of showcasing what Lumine has to offer,” said PGAs of Europe Chief Executive, Ian Randell.

“Hosting one of our Championships alongside a Sanctioned Event offers something for every type of player to head to Lumine and enjoy competitive golf and their fantastic facilities. We are looking forward to heading back there in February for another exciting few weeks!”

General Manager of Lumine, Calle Carlsson, commented: “We are delighted to have partnered once again with the PGAs of Europe for what promises to be two exciting events to help kick-start 2018 at Lumine. These tournaments are always fiercely competitive and of a high standard by the very nature of the professionals we have playing here. The Festival provides a great way for us to showcase both our superb golf courses and strengthen Lumine’s reputation as a host of top-level tournament golf.”

The PGA of Italy’s Lorenzo Gagli won the 2017 edition of the International Pro-Am after taming the windy conditions at Lumine to complete a wire-to-wire finish; his first PGAs of Europe Sanctioned Event win.

Gagli had used his momentum gathered from the 2017 Fourball Championship where he had finished tied-third with Emanuele Canonica, not far behind eventual winners from the PGA of Great Britain & Ireland, Paul Hendriksen and James Ruth, who closed with an outstanding seven-under round of 64 to take home the €6,150 first prize.

The international Pro-Am event proved to be hugely popular after its first edition in 2017, providing an excellent opportunity to showcase what Costa Navarino and the surrounding Messinia region have to offer, whilst helping to contribute to the development and awareness of golf and golf tourism in Greece.

PGA Professionals will battle it out for a prize fund of €50,000* in the official PGAs of Europe Sanctioned Event that falls under the auspices of the PGA of Greece, and the Hellenic Golf Federation and is supported by Aegean Airlines.

There is no Pro-Am package fee for each participating professional bringing a team of three amateurs, including complimentary flights with Aegean Airlines and accommodation at The Westin Resort Costa Navarino.

Amateur packages start at €1,575, with four, five and seven night options available, and include:

England’s David Lynn carded a three-under par 70 at National Golf Club in Turkey to take the 2017 Beko Classic Pro-Am honours.

The former European Tour Professional and 2013 Portugal Masters winner was able to move up from second after five birdies and two bogeys gave a six-under par total (213), seeing him claim the $10,000 winner’s cheque and his first PGAs of Europe Sanctioned Event title.

“I came out here with zero expectations having retired from tournament golf,” said Lynn. “My practice round was awful, but I managed to shoot a good score in Round 01 and continued from there so I’m delighted.

“I started a bit poorly today but then managed to string some birdies together, including on the last which I didn’t know at the time was to pip it by one. I’ve had some super teams…and out here you meet some great people, and that’s why we’re out here, having fun with it all.”

Fellow Englishman and PGA EuroPro Tour Professional, Andrew Marshall, also shot a 70 but was just one shot short of the target finishing at five-under par (214) for the week.

Overnight leader, Georg Schultes (PGA of Austria), could not capitalise on his lead but still shot a steady level-par 73 for third place at four-under (215).

Team Opet 2 [pictured above] were able to convert their lead to win the Team Pro-Am event with 260 points (-44). Amateurs Oya DagliArzu Narin and Nurten Ozturk partnered 2011 Open Champion and 2016 Ryder Cup Team Europe Captain, Darren Clarke, for their final round 87 points, and were also aided in their victorious run by the PGA of Great Britain & Ireland’s Garry Houston and PGA of Sweden Professional, Joakim Rask.

Opet 3 were in the chase all week and managed to match Opet 2’s 87 points, however it was not enough to catch the lead, giving them a 257-point (41) total, whilst Otokar 1 and Opet 4 finished in a tie for third place with 251 points (-35) a piece.

PGA of Austria and PGA Tour China Professional, Georg Schultes, put himself in pole position heading into the final round of the 2017 Beko Classic Pro-Am, after a solid 72 gave him a single-shot lead.

Two birdies and one bogey were all Schultes needed to card his one-under par gross score for a four-under total (142), advancing himself into first ahead of Englishman David Lynn, who played it steady with a level-par 73 made up of two birdies and two bogeys to sit at three under (143).

Andrew Marshall, moved up to third at two-under par (144) after a 72, closely followed by fellow Englishman, Jamie Elson, and PGA of Sweden Professional, Bjorn Pettersson, both on one under (145).

In the Team Pro-Am event Opet 2 of PGA of Sweden Professional, Joakim Rask, and amateurs, Oya Dagli, Arzu Narin and Nurten Ozturk, rose five places up the leaderboard after an excellent 93 points took them to a total of 173 points (-29).

Team Opet 3 sit three points back in second after another solid round of 86 points for a 170-point total (-26), whilst Otokar 1 advanced 10 places with 90 points to close a further three points back at 167 (-23).

The PGA of Sweden’s Joakim Rask has taken an early lead after Round 01 of the 2017 Beko Classic Pro-Am at National Golf Club in Belek, Turkey.

The Swede opened with two birdies in his stunning five-under par round of 68, with a further three birdies in nine holes followed by seven regulation pars.

Just two shots behind are the European Tour’s David Lynn and PGA of Austria’s Georg Schultes, each carding three-under par 70s. Lynn managed three birdies and the rest pars, whilst Schultes made five birdies, but failed to capitalise on the par-fives with two bogeys on holes four and 15.

The PGA of Great Britain & Ireland’s Sion Bebb and PGA EuroPro Tour Member, Andrew Marshall, sit at fourth (-2, 71) and fifth (-1, 72) place respectively very much in the mix.

Major winners, Michael Campbell and Darren Clarke, will join Professionals from 11 countries for the 21st edition of the Beko Classic Pro-Am, taking place from 29th September to 1st October at National Golf Club in Belek, Turkey.

Campbell earned his Major victory at the 2005 US Open at Pinehurst finishing two shots ahead of Tiger Woods having qualified at the European Sectional event at Walton Heath, England, at the beginning of the week.

2011 Open Champion, Clarke, returns to the Pro-Am after a year’s absence in which he captained Team Europe at the 2016 Ryder Cup matches at Hazeltine National Golf Club.

Joining Campbell and Clarke making up the 26-team field are a whole host of Professionals from across Europe with a combined 54 Major, European Tour, Challenge Tour and PGA Tour wins between them.

2017 Aegean Airlines Pro-Am winner, Peter Gustafsson (PGA of Spain), and 2016 Mercedes-Benz International Pro-Am winner, Georg Schultes (PGA of Austria), will both play for the first time.

2013 Portugal Masters and 2004 KLM Open winner, David Lynn, returns to the Beko Classic making a total of 25 European Tour wins amongst the field to go along with the combined 23 Challenge Tour, two majors, and four PGA Tour wins.

2017 World Club Pro-Am winner, Garry Houston, joins the Professional field hot off the PGA of Great Britain & Ireland’s historic victory in the PGA Cup against the PGA of America in which he helped secure a record 16 points for Team GB&I, the most scored against the US since the event began in 1973.

Raymond Russell (PGA of GB&I) is the only returning champion in this year’s Pro-Am and will look to replicate his 2010 victory, whilst fellow Beko Classic regular, Sion Bebb, will no doubt be trying to use his recent PGA of GB&I Welsh National PGA Championship victory as a springboard to a successful performance this year.

Bjorn Pettersson, Oscar Floren, Joakim Rask, and Jesper Kennegard make up a strong PGA of Sweden contingent. PGA of GB&I Professionals Chris Gane and Lloyd Kennedy join the field, alongside the PGA of Spain’s Álvaro Salto.

PGA of Italy Professional, Federico Elli, got another PGAs of Europe win under his belt after three successive three-under rounds earned him the 9th BlackSeaRama Vivacom Pro-Am title in Bulgaria.

Starting the final round with a two-shot lead, Elli played yet more solid and steady golf in windy conditions for a 69 and a nine-under par (206) total.

“It’s been a great day – I had good ball-striking but didn’t putt well,” said Elli. “But then three birdies on the last three holes really helped me out, especially on 18 as it’s a monster hole.

“I made a swing change last year and I worked a lot and it’s starting to pay off…so I would like to thank my teacher, Andrea Corbellini, who helped me a lot.”

With the low score of the day, the PGA of France’s Julien Gressier rose up the leaderboard to finish in second place. Over his closing holes, the Frenchman went birdie-eagle-birdie for a five-under 67 and a total of 212 (-3).

The PGA of Spain’s Peter Gustafsson started the day in second but moved back to finish in third after an uncharacteristic two-over 74 gave him a total of 213 (-2).

However, Gustafsson and his team of Krasimir Balakov, Lubomir Tushev and Andon Tushev were able to convert their overnight lead in the Team Pro-Am event. A solid closing 87 points (-15) was enough for a two-point victory with 259 points (-43).

Adam Sagar (PGA of Spain) and his amateurs Konstantin Belov, Todor Chakov and Dimitar Georgiev, moved back one place into second with their 257-point total (-41).

Federico Elli (PGA of Italy) laid yet more groundwork at the 9th BlackSeaRama Vivacom Pro-Am in Bulgaria, with an outstanding four-under par 68 around the notoriously challenging Thracian Cliffs Golf & Spa Resort.

The Italian’s second round play gives him a two-shot lead at six-under par (137) for the tournament and a buffer heading into the final round at the Gary Player-designed BlackSeaRama Golf & Villas.

Also making a charge is Peter Gustafsson (PGA of Spain) who carded a three-under 69 for a four-under total (139) and every chance of moving into the lead.

Overnight co-leader, Ulas Karatas (PGA of Turkey), didn’t manage to keep up the pace with a one-over 73 but is still very much in the mix and one-under (142) for the tournament with his Brother, Bulent Karatas (PGA of Turkey), just one further stroke behind on even par (143).

In the teams it was Adam Sagar (PGA of Spain) and his amateurs Konstantin Belov, Todor Chakov and Dimitar Georgiev, that kept their lead with 85 points (-13) in their second round for a two-round total of 172 (-28).

Joining them in first position is Gustafsson and his amateurs, Krasimir Balakov, Lubomir Tushev and Andon Tushev, after their 87 points (-15) – the highest points score of the day – moved them two places up the leaderboard with one round to play.

The PGA of Italy’s Federico Elli and PGA of Turkey’s Ulas Karatas are tied at the top of the leaderboard after Round 01 of the 9th BlackSeaRama Vivacom Pro-Am in Bulgaria.

The Pro-Am’s first stop was at the Ian Woosnam-designed Lighthouse Golf & Spa Resort where windy conditions made for tough scoring.

Elli and Karatas each carded two-under par 69s around the 6,159m course to hold the lead, but are only one shot ahead of Peter Gustafsson (PGA of Spain) who is coming off a recent win at the 2017 Aegean Airlines Pro-Am last month.

Savas Karatas (PGA of Turkey), Henrik Engdahl (PGA of Greece) and Pangiotis Karantzias (PGA of Greece) all share fourth position after level par 71s.
