PGA of Great Britain & Ireland Advanced Fellow Professional, Ian Peek, will speak at the 2016 A.S.K. Workshops in Hungary on 26th July – Here Ian explains more about his chosen subject matter…

Q: What is the similarity between someone winning a fortune in the lottery draw (lotto) and an elite amateur golfer turning professional?

A: Their sudden change of status means both undergo the process of ‘transition’ and managing that process well is easier said than done.

The challenge of successfully ‘transitioning’ is highlighted by the fact that up to 70% of all major lottery winners worldwide end up bankrupt within a few years of their big win and less than 1% of elite amateurs make the ‘grade’ in big-time professional golf.

For my Sports Coaching MSc dissertation I was lucky enough to interview nine former elite male amateur golfers about their experiences following their transition to professional golf. My presentation at the first A.S.K workshop in Hungary will cover some of the findings of my research and possibly challenge those present to see the process of ‘elite players turning professional’ through new eyes.

‘Barriers and coping resources’ is an expression coined by Dr Natalia Stambulova, one of the world leaders in understanding why some athletes make the grade while most do not. It refers to Dr. Stambulova’s ‘formula for success’ for elite athletes.

During my presentation I will draw on some of her research work as well as that Dr. Nancy Schlossberg; a leading authority of ‘life transitions’.

PGA of GB&I Advanced Fellow Professional at the Impact Golf Academy, Ian Peek, will be presenting at the 2015 Coaches Circle from 27-28 July at Pravets Golf & Spa Resort. Here, Ian explains more about his presentation as well as additional pre-event reading.

Research has shown coaching and the relationships between players, parents and diverse coaches to be an often “messy” and complex process. My interest in the subject of inter-coach relationships initially stems from my own experiences during an eight year period (2001-2008) where I was a highly motivated junior coach at Sigmaringen Golf Club in South-West Germany.

During that period and under my guidance, our junior programme developed 5 elite players who went on to gain state (regional) or national recognition through their on-course achievements. My relationship with the various county and national coaches during that period varied from very collaborative to passive-aggressive to non-existent.

Feedback from many home and regional/national coaching colleagues throughout Europe indicate tension or a lack of communication often exists between them and one can reasonably assume these seemingly fractured relationships impact negatively upon player development.

During my 2015 Coaches Circle presentation I will initially discuss the “why?” behind the differing relationships between home and county/national coaches. Part of this discussion will cover the micro-politics of governing bodies within Golf, the various effect of pyramid systems on coaches and players, and why coaches may find it difficult to “park their ego” when working with junior players.

To conclude my presentation I will suggest two possible strategies for developing more productive home and regional/national coach relationships.

2015 Annual Congress Sets New Standard for Flagship Event http://www.pgae.com/news/2015-annual-congress-sets-new-standard-for-flagship-event/ Fri, 18 Dec 2015 18:31:11 +0000 PGAs of Europe http://www.pgae.com/?p=14047 The 2015 edition of the Annual Congress was hailed the best ever as representatives from the PGAs of Europe’s 37 Member Countries gathered at Gloria Hotels & Re]]>

The 2015 edition of the Annual Congress was hailed the best ever as representatives from the PGAs of Europe’s 37 Member Countries gathered at Gloria Hotels & Resorts in Turkey in December for the annual meeting whilst also celebrating the Association’s 25th Anniversary.

The Annual Congress is the chance for PGA representatives, along with leaders from Federations and other significant golfing bodies from across the continent, to meet and discuss the state of play within their respective territories, as well as learn and share ideas with each other alongside fantastic speakers from not only the world of golf but wider industries as well.

This year the Gloria Serenity Hotel at Gloria Hotels & Resorts in Turkey’s Belek region played host to the event giving delegates a taste of luxury during their stay that included four days of presentations, workshops and networking interspersed with golf at Gloria Golf Club’s New Course.

The Congress week got off on the right foot with in-depth one-to-one sessions with many of the Member PGAs’ representatives looking at elements of their associations such as education, membership and communications.

The second day then began the group sessions with working groups looking at how success and good practice can be shared amongst the members, followed closely by a great example of how collaboration between different amateur and professional bodies in a country can be so beneficial with insights from Director of Golf and Business Development at the Confederation of Golf in Ireland, John Roche. The PGA of Sweden then also shared their work and efforts in the area of using the PGA Professional as a resource for golf in their country.

Day three started with a look at the International Golf Coaching Framework (IGCF) developed by the PGA World Alliance with PGA Executive Director – Education, Global Development for the PGA of Great Britain & Ireland, Dr. Kyle Phillpots.

A hands-on session then followed with Alan McColm from MBR Solutions who looked at helping develop practical leadership skills to help build a sustainable business and operation, giving delegates the chance to develop tangible actions to take back to their teams in their native countries.

The final day consisted of updates on the PGA Junior League, the Association’s recognition of professional standards with Chairman of the Education Committee, Jonathan Mannie, and Director of Education & Membership, Tony Bennett, as well as a look at the upcoming inclusion of golf at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil with IGF Executive Director, Antony Scanlon.

The Congress sessions closed with anniversary-focused sessions – the first of which took a look back at the first 25 years of the Association with key individuals from across its history: Current Chairman, Sandy Jones, former Secretary, Lawrie Thornton, past Honorary President, Donato di Ponziano, and former Education Committee Chairman, Leif Ohlsson.

Closing out the final section was a look at where the Association is currently, and most importantly what might lie in store for the PGAs of Europe and its members in the future. Chief Executive, Ian Randell, and Communications Manager, Aston Ward, explored how the Association operates in 2015 and then how this could change over the next 10, 15, and 25 years as the world and its inhabitants change rapidly, and how national PGAs should be aware and ready to act in response to, and ahead of, these changes.

As is tradition the Congress closed with the coming together of delegates and the ITC competitors at the Annual Gala Awards Dinner supported by Rolex where awards were handed to six highly deserving winners including Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Bernhard Langer, and 5 Star Professional Award winner, Paul Lawrie.

Gloria Hotels & Resorts in Belek, Turkey, will once again host two key events returning from 8th to 11th December 2015, in the form of the Annual Congress and the International Team Championship (ITC).

Representatives from the Association’s 36 Member Countries, along with leaders from Federations and other significant golfing bodies from across the continent, will meet and discuss the state of play within their respective territories, as well as learn and share ideas with each other alongside fantastic speakers from not only the world of golf but wider industries as well.

Then, running simultaneously to the Congress, the ITC will pit teams from across the PGAs of Europe’s Member PGAs against each other across 72-holes at Gloria Golf Club with the best two individual scores each day from the team of three counting towards the overall team score. 2014 winners, Scotland, will look to make it three wins in four years and repeat their 10-shot victory over the rest of teams when they return.

“Our partnership with Gloria has already shown to be hugely effective from both sides,” said Ian Randell, PGAs of Europe Chief Executive. “The resort offers superb accommodation, extensive meeting facilities, great golf courses and offers plenty of variety for both our delegates and players. With such rich surroundings to our flagship event, it is no wonder our guests value the experience greatly and are looking forward to returning for a second year.”

“We are very pleased to be hosting the PGAs of Europe’s Annual Congress again this year,“ explained Öznur Özdemir Özaltin, CEO of Gloria Hotels & Resorts. “We are especially excited to relive the International Team Championship, which is a key part of the Congress week. Last year the Scots took the glory – we can’t wait to see who will win this time around!”

With Gloria’s fantastic Serenity Resort acting as the base for both events, the week will conclude with a gala award dinner bringing Congress delegates and ITC competitors together in celebration of the Association’s 25th Anniversary, the annual award winners and the ITC Champions.

High Performance Manager for the Irish Ladies Golf Union (ILGU), David Kearney, will be presenting at the 2015 Coaches Circle from 27-28 July at Pravets Golf & Spa Resort. Here, David explains more about his presentation as well as additional pre-event reading.

A young girl starts her journey into sport and finds she enjoys it greatly.

Community, friendships, challenges are all part of her life now and she really loves it. She gets good, improves, and moves her way along the pathway to land at High Performance level.

But is there a cost, a price to pay?

In our presentation we look at the possible roadblocks and perhaps how they can be avoided or at least smoothly navigated:

 • Girls are not small boys. Attention and awareness on the difference is a must.
 • The role of the parent…Enabler or Disabler – How can we help the parents of our athletes to understand what strategies may be helpful and also those that may be destructive?
 • Push/Pull: The dynamics of crafted encouragement.
 • Onboarding and off boarding of players in a responsible manner. If the players know what is expected, then it is clear and De-selection becomes less contentious.
 • Why mindfulness is so important in young people in today’s environment.
 • Developing a like-minded coaching team, with the culture of the team in mind.
 • Duty of care – Do we fully understand what this is?
 • School work and its balance, why is this really important particularly in Europe. What is the culture of education in your set-up?
 • Feedback… The need for it and a proper approach.
 • Planning and de-briefing. A model for your mission.

The PGAs of Europe Coaches Circle concluded with more than 40 PGA Professionals from all over Europe, together with more from Canada, being stimulated after a series of workshops and presentations at Pravets Golf & Spa Resort, Bulgaria.

21 countries were represented at the event and were brought together under the umbrella theme of youth golf and to time with the EGA’s European Team Shield Championship.

With subject matter such as working with federations, junior player development, high performance in youth golf, junior academies and coaching relationships, the event has already received hugely positive praise:

“The feedback we’ve received so far has been excellent – really first class,” said PGAs of Europe Director of Education & Membership, Tony Bennett. “With the format we have it is very interactive and rather than just have ‘talking heads’…this has been an opportunity for the delegates to really dig into the minds and souls of the speakers.

“Coaches Circle is a ‘mastermind’ group where coaches are of a like-mind but also a like-task, having similar things to do in terms of dealing with players, national teams, etc., are given an opportunity to work together, bounce ideas off each other… and perhaps give a bit of support.”

The education event continued its tradition of selecting some of the best speakers from across the continent and further afield to educate, inform and discuss the subject matter of youth golf.

“We always take the view that we have lots of good speakers and lots of good people in Europe, and with that in mind you don’t always have to go for celebrity teachers,” added Bennett. “There’s lots of good work getting done out there every day on every driving range somewhere in Europe. Those people are working with the players at the sharp end and understand what is going on. So we felt as though we could put a very good group of people together from that background.”

The international golf trade fair GOLF EUROPE will not be held until next year

As the organiser of the international golf trade fair GOLF EUROPE, Messe Augsburg has decided to move the trade fair to next year. Despite the extensive interest displayed by both exhibitors and partners, the latest developments in the golf industry necessitate a review of the future organisation of this event.

In the past few years, GOLF EUROPE has successfully established itself as a business platform for the entire European golf industry. The high quality standards and attentiveness of the trade fair team and the choice of Augsburg as a trade fair location as it is centrally situated in a charming region and has excellent transport links have won unanimous praise.

The exhibitors from the various industry sectors nevertheless seem very heterogeneous, especially as far as the ideal timeframe for the trade fair is concerned. It has therefore been decided that the industry meeting’s profile needs to be defined in more detail for the relevant target groups in consultation with the partners in order to find a date that is as convenient as possible for all participants.

It is hoped that this will boost the level of interest ready for the new trade fair date in 2016, which will be announced in due time.

You will find further information on GOLF EUROPE on the following pages or contact us personally – we shall be pleased to help you!

Chairman of the PGAs of Europe Education Committee, Jonathan Mannie, will be presenting at the 2015 Coaches Circle from 27-28 July at Pravets Golf & Spa Resort. Here, Jonathan looks at how coaches can be better prepared to meet the objectives of national teams and their federations.

The interaction between a federation and their national coach is a fundamental of any success which the players will have on the course. A harmonious relationship must exist in spirit of mutual trust and respect. A thorough understanding of the selection structure, aspirations and needs of the federation is perhaps the most important first step.

Once fully understood, the relationship can develop and be hugely beneficial for all parties, federation, coach and most importantly for the players. The coach is effectively a bridge to connect the federation and players, and if the objectives of one collide with the other then it will be the coach who has to deal with the impact. It is obvious that the coach must deliver on the federations objectives, but must also protect the interests of the players.

Article-Header-Images_PGAs-of-Europe---Jonathan-Mannie_01

Coaching a group of talented athletes is always a challenge and involves some key areas that require understanding:

 • Understanding of the standard of golf throughout Europe
 • Understanding entry criteria into top amateur tournaments
 • Understanding the development of players from good to elite players

Transparency in the structure, selection criteria and reporting is a must and should be laid out in the contract, whilst clarity in the expectations of all concerned will make things easier and as time goes on.

During the presentation I will also look at some of the concepts that I have developed which help to define my approach to coaching national teams that will act as a ‘how-to’ guide.

One of these is BTMES, which stands for Body, Technique, Mental, Emotional and Social. Working with these five areas as key markers in your schedule and programme will help address many challenges before they become a bigger issue.

In preparation for the presentation I would encourage you to look into the structures of federations, how national teams are established, as well as the selection criteria that are commonly used for national players.

PGA of GB&I Advanced Fellow Professional and Director of Coaching for Cranfield Golf, Steven Orr, presented at the 2015 Coaches Circle from 27-28 July at Pravets Golf & Spa Resort. Here, Steven outlines the background to his presentation as well as additional reading.

The purpose of this presentation is to look closely at the development of junior players who are close to, or have just begun to play, for their country in national and international matches.

Working with many talented junior players individually and also as an England Golf coach for the south-east of England, several players make the step up, while many more don’t. This presentation will attempt to answer the following questions;

 • What skills do junior players need to move up from regional to national level?
 • What is the difference between those who move up and those who don’t?
 • What happens when roadblocks appear? And should the coach create these intentionally?
 • How can a coach implement mental skills into the players training? And which are most important for a player at this stage of development
 • How can a coach effectively create habit change in junior golfers?

In an attempt to answer these questions, this presentation will draw on research on psychology, motivation and habit change as well as looking at real world case studies of players that have progressed and those that haven’t and reasons why.

International Trade Fair, GOLF EUROPE, Goes From Strength to Strength http://www.pgae.com/news/international-trade-fair-golf-europe-going-from-strength-to-strength/ Wed, 01 Oct 2014 20:24:07 +0000 PGAs of Europe http://www.pgae.com/?p=12780 GOLF EUROPE returned in September for its 21st outing as the key international trade show in the golfing industry’s calendar with 115 exhibitors and more than 2]]>

GOLF EUROPE returned in September for its 21st outing as the key international trade show in the golfing industry’s calendar with 115 exhibitors and more than 2,000 visitors from 30 countries, coinciding perfectly with the outstanding performance by Team Europe at the 2014 Ryder Cup matches.

An Impressive Business Showcase For the Golf industry

Gerhard Reiter, Managing Director of host venue, Messe Augsburg, is ambitious in terms of the future development of GOLF EUROPE: “With our team and associates we feel that we are really well set up. The positive response with regard to how the trade fair has been organised, the location here in Augsburg and the exceptionally good atmosphere at this year’s event proves this again. Of course we make no secret of the fact either that it would be very important for us to be able to offer a showcase for the entire industry if at all possible – in any case we are on the right road to doing so.”

High-Powered Lectures For the Benefit of PGA Professionals

This year the support programme for GOLF EUROPE included the “Pro Shop Forum” and the “PGA Learn & Earn Zone”. Light was shed in the talks given in the “Pro Shop Forum” targeting businesses from the textile and functional clothing sector, on the topics of planning and management accounting aiming to make these companies more profitable with independent management consultant, Uwe Duchardt. “How to display clothing and footwear correctly and how to use sales aids effectively” with adidas & Ashworth Golf’s Axel Beland was also a popular topic of discussion.

There were informative and very interesting lectures given again in the “Learn & Earn Zone”, amongst other things there was a talk given by Dr David McGhie, the Research and Development Manager at Swing Catalyst which focussed on research into biomechanics and the topic of “ground reaction forces and driving” as well as from Michael Arndt and Christian Sude from Golf-Osteopathie Deutschland, about “The impact of the upper cervical spine being blocked on the Golf swing from the osteopath’s perspective.”

On the Monday of GOLF EUROPE the Golf Management Verband Deutschland organised the “The conflict between golf management and golf schools” workshop.

With 83 products, there are more entries than ever before for the PRODUCT AWARD

The PRODUCT AWARD is presented for innovative entrepreneurial spirit in the golfing industry. The winning products were exhibited throughout the entire trade fair in the GOLF EUROPE PRODUCT AWARD display area and the winners now have the option of using the PRODUCT AWARD Logo when advertising their products. 83 products were entered for the GOLF EUROPE PRODUCT AWARD 2014, that is more than ever before. An international jury of experts subjected the innovative products to close scrutiny and assessed them.

The winners in the Clothing category are the SUNICE Collection from SUNICE and XFORE GOLFWEAR.
In the Accessories category the winners were Para’Kito Mückenschutz from Green-Grass-Golf Europe GmbH & Co KG and Lite Golf Balls from Nassau Europe.
The Training Aids + Customer Fitting category was won by The Swing Catalyst App from Swing Catalyst and PUTTERWHEEL from BB GOLFSTYLE DISTRIBUTION.
The BENNINGTON “QO-14 WATERPROOF” entered by the HAAS Handelsagentur was victorious in the Golfbags category.
The trolleys selected by the jury come from GolfQuant as well as Motocaddy M 3 Pro entered by Motocaddy.
Last not least, the award-winning clubs were: Lightspeed Irons from Komperdell plus Tight Lies Hybrid from Adams Golf.

Augsburg goes down really well

There was praise from all sides for Augsburg as the venue for the trade fair. Its ease of accessibility, availability of all grades of hotel and the exceptional charm of the second-oldest town in Germany are valued by exhibitors and visitors alike.

Exhibitor’s voices

“The live screening of the Final Day of the Ryder Cup made for a great atmosphere right at the beginning of the trade in which to conduct discussions. As expected, Monday was very busy, and all in all laid the foundations enabling the trade fair to achieve its former glory again. Our expectations have in any case been fulfilled,” is what Karsten Klische, Business Manager of Wilson Golf Deutschland has to say.

“An outstanding trade fair with many customers from Germany and Austria, and this time from Switzerland in particular. GOLF EUROPE is a very important showcase event for us. The event gets better from year to year!”
Josef Kerschbaumer, Managing Director of KOMPERDELL

“A very good trade fair and all the major and important key accounts and buyers were there. I am very satisfied with the orders we took in there. The atmosphere generated by the Ryder Cup was great, almost as good as seeing it live.”
Markus Heessel, Managing Director of Green Grass Golf

“With Ben Sayers we represent one of the oldest brands which has existed since 1873 and we offer a great product selection. The trade fair went very well for us and we really did get a great deal out of it with a large number of orders, including some very large orders too. We are more than happy and we shall continue to use and support the showcase in future.”
Gareth Hickin, Sales Manager of Ben Sayers

“A great trade fair with many international exhibitors. We had a large number of very interesting contacts, and everything went very well too with regard to how the trade fair was organised.”
Thore Bakker, Partner at PGO

“The way the trade fair went was great for us. As winners of this year’s PRODUCT AWARDS we would like to see the trade fair continue to be expanded – we have some more new ideas for the coming years.”
Udo Hübner, Jens Winternheimer from Golf Quant

“Super, really as good as it could be! We made some really good contacts with just the target group we wanted to reach. We are very satisfied and we shall definitely be coming again next year!”
Patrick Klemm from K2H-Golf Equipment
