Costa Navarino in Greece will play host to the 2017 PGAs of Europe Annual Congress and International Team Championship (ITC) for the first time as the events take place from 22-25 November.

The hosting of the Association’s flagship event continues the successful relationship between the PGAs of Europe and the prime sustainable destination in the Mediterranean that currently includes sanctioning of their Messinia Pro-Am and regularly hosting the Aegean Airlines Pro-Am.

“We are extremely excited to be able to take two of our key events to Costa Navarino and bring them fully into our Corporate Partner family,” said PGAs of Europe Chief Executive, Ian Randell.

“We have been visiting them since their formation and it is a stunning venue with two first class golf courses. Costa Navarino has quickly become established as one of Europe’s, if not the world’s, leading golf destinations. We are proud to be showcasing this superb destination and its facilities to leaders of our National PGAs and the competitors who have qualified to represent their PGAs in the ITC.”

“We are honoured that Costa Navarino has been chosen to host the PGAs of Europe’s flagship event and we look forward to welcoming the Association in the region of Messinia,” said Stephanos Theodorides, Managing Director and Vice Chairman of TEMES S.A. – Developers of Costa Navarino.

“A combination of perfect weather year-round, two award-winning golf courses by the sea, high-quality facilities and authentic experiences, Costa Navarino, chosen by IAGTO as “European Golf Resort of the Year 2017”, is fast becoming a leading golf destination to enjoy in every season.”

The Annual Congress is the Association’s yearly opportunity to bring representatives from its 35 Member Country PGAs together under one roof, facilitating meetings, discussions and workshops to share ideas, progress and various ways they can advance their organisations and golf in their respective territories.

The ITC then runs alongside the Congress in which teams from across the Association’s Member Countries compete over 72 holes on The Dunes Course, designed by Bernhard Langer. The best two individual scores each day from the team of three will count towards the overall team score, and a secondary event sees small and emerging Member PGAs compete for the ITC Shield.

The Westin Resort Costa Navarino will act as the base for both events, concluding with the Gala Awards Dinner supported by Rolex, bringing Congress delegates and ITC competitors together in celebration of the annual award winners and the ITC Champions.

The Annual Congress & ITC are partnered by Costa Navarino, the Ryder Cup European Development Trust, BMW and Aegean Airlines, and are supported by The Botanist, The Blue Beetle, Bulldog, G’Vine gins, Marendry apperitivo, and Fever-Tree Premium Natural Mixers.

5-Star Walker Receives Prestigious PGAs of Europe Award http://www.pgae.com/news/5-star-walker-receives-prestigious-pgas-of-europe-award/ Wed, 26 Apr 2017 10:30:02 +0000 PGAs of Europe http://www.pgae.com/?p=18693 PGA of GB&I Master Professional, Alan Walker, has received the 5-Star Professional Award in recognition of his outstanding career as a PGA Professional...]]>

PGA of GB&I Master Professional and EIGCA Golf Course Architect, Alan Walker, has received the 5-Star Professional Award from the PGAs of Europe in recognition of his outstanding career as a PGA Professional.

“It is a tremendous honour,” said Walker. “I feel very privileged and proud to be holding this trophy when I think of all the famous names that have won this award – it signifies the peak of my career, so I’m really pleased.

“It means everything to me. You have to be proud that you are a PGA Professional because the status that it gives you in life, and the opportunities it affords you are things that people look up to you for.”

Nominated by the PGA in England and selected by the PGAs of Europe’s award selection committee, Walker’s 5-Star Professional Award acknowledges the highest level of standards across the many and varied areas of expertise and activity that he has been involved with.

“I think it goes back to when my father used to say to me “if at first you don’t succeed then try, try again” and that’s really all I’ve been doing ever since I was a boy. I just enjoy every facet of the golf industry.

“I wake up every day and believe it’s not work, it’s a hobby. It is a great privilege to be a Golf Professional and a Member of the PGA of GB&I.”

Having previously been on the PGA of GB&I’s Board of Directors from 1983 to 2001 and its Captain between 1999 and 2001, Walker is a PGA Master Professional and Honorary Member of the PGA.

He is the Director and Proprietor of Garon Park Golf Complex in Essex, England, a course he designed himself in 1994, which was awarded the prestigious title of GolfMark Club of the Year in 2013.

Walker has continued to give back to the game through his selfless work on various Boards and Committees, helping to improve and develop the game as a tutor for the PGA of GB&I and the European Institute of Golf Course Architects, as a rules official for a number of years across PGA, European Tour and Ladies European Tour events, and as a Golf Development Professional for The R&A in Botswana and Peru.

“My advice for PGA Professionals out there is to look at every opportunity, never say no, and make sure that you put something back in. It is no good sitting there thinking because you’ve qualified and you are a member that everything is fine – it is just a starting position for you and you have to work as hard as you can.”

Throughout his career Walker has always focused on helping young Professionals and individuals in his businesses and in particular as an educator, passing on his vast experience and knowledge, whilst always remaining sympathetic to the upholding of the traditions and values of the PGA.

He continues to advance his career and business interests, running his own golf consultancy and golf course design business, as well as with his leadership of Garon Park.

John Paramor Awarded Christer Lindberg Bowl For Services to European Golf http://www.pgae.com/news/john-paramor-awarded-christer-lindberg-bowl-for-services-to-european-golf/ Fri, 03 Feb 2017 12:32:47 +0000 PGAs of Europe http://www.pgae.com/?p=17633 World-renowned rules official & European Tour Chief Referee, John Paramor, has been awarded the PGAs of Europe's Christer Lindberg Bowl...]]>

World-renowned rules official and European Tour Chief Referee, John Paramor, has been awarded the Christer Lindberg Bowl at the PGAs of Europe Annual Congress Gala Awards Dinner supported by Rolex.

The award, named after the PGAs of Europe’s first Chairman, is awarded to individuals or organisations in recognition of their impact on, and services to, golf.

Paramor is the deserving winner of the award having worked as a rules official for the European Tour for over 40 years, becoming one of the most highly respected and esteemed referees in golf, and playing his part in the evolution of the Rules of Golf and the way that they are taught to golfers and PGA Professionals across the globe.

“I feel very proud, but obviously not worthy,” said Paramor. “I’ve loved my life in golf so this is the icing on the cake really, it’s absolutely fantastic.

“I’ve been very lucky to work with some fantastic people, some absolutely brilliant players and I owe them for the chance that it’s given me to try and help them.

“I’m also lucky to have worked with some great administrators in the game…Ken Schofield at the start – he employed me and John Jacobs was very much on the scene at that time too.

“The first people I worked with were George O’Grady and Tony Gray, so I was able to take all their best points – well I hope I did anyway – and use them as my own! And now of course we are in the era of Keith Pelley who is bringing a freshness and a vibrancy to the game itself.”

Paramor began his golfing career as a player but moved away from the thought of playing for a living having seen the likes of Neil Coles, Bernard Hunt and Peter Butler play, whilst caddying for the latter.

With a fascination for the Rules of Golf, Paramor was able to join the European Tour in 1976 as a Referee. Over the coming years Paramor would progress to become a Tournament Director in 1979, Director of Tour Operations in 1985 and subsequently Chief Referee in 1991.

Since then he has overseen some of the biggest tournaments in the world and has recently passed his 100th Major Championship as a referee and is not far from his 1000th tournament. He has refereed some of the greatest golfers of all time and in 2016 was the Chief Referee at the return of Olympic Golf in Rio

Paramor was presented with his award at the Association’s Gala Awards Dinner having led a session with Annual Congress Delegates earlier in the day on some of the many highlights he has had throughout his career.

“It’s very special to be present at the Annual Congress because, certainly from a rules perspective, so many of the Professionals in Europe, and Member Countries of the PGAs of Europe have to anchor the rules and teach the youngsters coming into the game. So they have a very strong and important role in the future of the game.

“It’s been great to be here and be amongst the PGAs, trying to pass on a little bit of the fun that I’ve had so that they can take that forward…hopefully helping European golf to be stronger than ever.”

There is little sign of Paramor’s involvement and authority in the rules world diminishing and having had such influence in the sport for so long ensures a lasting legacy will remain for many years to come.

“I hope I can continue to a point just before the players want to get rid of me! But I want to make sure that hopefully I’ve left the game in a better place than when I joined it.”

Paramor joins an illustrious roll of honour with fellow Christer Lindberg Bowl winners including Annika Sorenstam, Jaime Ortiz-Patiño, Neil Coles, Sir Michael Bonallack, Ken Schofield CBE, Joe Steranka, IMG and recently appointed PGAs of Europe Honorary President, George O’Grady CBE.

Slovenia’s Uroš Gregorič Wins Leading European Award for Golf Development http://www.pgae.com/news/slovenias-uros-gregoric-wins-leading-european-award-for-golf-development/ Tue, 31 Jan 2017 14:09:46 +0000 PGAs of Europe http://www.pgae.com/?p=17755 Vice President & Head of Education of the PGA of Slovenia, Uroš Gregorič, has received the President’s Award for Golf Development from the PGAs of Europe...]]>

Vice President and Head of Education of the PGA of Slovenia, Uroš Gregorič, has received the President’s Award for Golf Development from the PGAs of Europe at the Association’s Gala Awards supported by Rolex.

The President’s Award for Golf Development acknowledges the work of an individual or specific project that has excelled in developing golf. Gregorič’s efforts in ensuring Slovenian Professionals are expertly trained and are developing the sport effectively, along with his own golf development activities as a coach for the Slovenian and Serbian national teams and at his own academy, exemplify this.

Thanks to the work of Gregorič, the PGA of Slovenia’s Professional education programme gained ‘PGA Coach’ level status in the PGAs of Europe’s European Education Level System (EELS) that is used to mark the required programme standards in Member Country PGAs.

The PGA of Slovenia is the first emerging country of its size to achieve this recognition and, with the key input of Gregorič, have created a sustainable programme that will continue to advance in the coming years, whilst also providing a fantastic example to other emerging countries about what is achievable and how.

“Thank you for the great recognition,” said Gregorič after receiving the award at Gloria Hotels & Resorts in Turkey. “It has been great achieving the award, the goals of the PGA of Slovenia, and getting recognised for the development in our country.

“The knowledge of our Professionals will move the PGA, and golf, forward. I do a lot of education for myself, but I also want to deliver it to the other pros who do not travel that much and do not have the opportunity to go abroad…I think that the better the system, the better the coaches and the better the players.”

Gregorič was appointed as Head of Education of the Golf Association of Slovenia in 2005 and latterly Head of Education for the PGA of Slovenia. Since then has been primarily responsible for substantial advancements made in the sport’s education.

“We’ve been working for quite some time to get this [EELS] recognition and I am very proud of all of the tutors who have done a great job at putting the programmes together,” Gregorič added.

Before Gregorič’s appointment as Head of Education, the existing systems in place had fairly simplistic guidelines and lacked depth. However, by 2006, the education system had been extended to a thorough three-level program, designed by Gregorič, and was recognised for the first time by the Slovenian Ministry of Sports and Education.

He was rewarded for his efforts in developing the education system and was made Vice President of the PGA of Slovenia in 2013 and later on named Head of Education specifically for the PGA. There he has made it his priority to further improve the education of the PGA members and ensure the game continues to grow in the country.

“In the future, I am going to stay involved in education definitely and we might extend the programme to the top level hopefully in the near future – I haven’t told that to Boris [Kosuta, President of the PGA of Slovenia] yet! But I want to improve players in Slovenia so we have male and female players on the European and PGA Tours; that’s our goal.”

Gregorič‘s interests lie not only in the administrative arena as well – as a player he was a Slovenian amateur team member, then turning Professional in 2004, and as a coach he founded the ‘Golf Academy Diners Club Ljubljana’ and has worked as Head Coach for the Slovenian national team and is also an advisor to the Serbian national teams.

Mike Walker Lands Top European Coaching Award in Name of Late-Great John Jacobs http://www.pgae.com/news/mike-walker-lands-top-european-coaching-award-in-name-of-late-great-john-jacobs/ Thu, 26 Jan 2017 18:37:21 +0000 PGAs of Europe http://www.pgae.com/?p=17635 Mike Walker has been awarded the John Jacobs Award for Teaching & Coaching at the PGAs of Europe’s Annual Congress Gala Awards supported by Rolex...]]>

Mike Walker, coach of Masters champion Danny Willett, has been awarded the John Jacobs Award for Teaching & Coaching at the PGAs of Europe’s Annual Congress Gala Awards supported by Rolex.

Walker was nominated by the PGA of Great Britain & Ireland and acknowledged with the accolade due to being seen as one of the world’s leading coaches having brought success to over 40 European Tour players over the past 10 years.

“I feel very humbled and very proud – especially with John Jacobs linked to my roots at Hallamshire and Lindrick Golf Clubs at different stages,” said Walker. “One of my players, Matt Fitzpatrick, originates from Hallamshire, and my first proper golf lesson was at Lindrick with Pete Cowen so it seems quite fitting.

“I am extremely honoured to be associated with such a household name, especially with his recent passing. My condolences go to his family and friends and I hope they know how much this means to me.”

The John Jacobs Award is the PGAs of Europe’s highest coaching accolade and is presented to a PGA Professional who has excelled as a golf coach at all levels of the game, be it with elite or beginner players alike across a number of years.

Previous winners of the award have included Shane Lowry’s coach, Neil Manchip, along with Michael Bannon, coach of Rory McIlroy and Salvador Luna, coach of Sergio Garcia.

“I know it’s a cliché but everybody values being acknowledged by their peers,” added Walker. “Obviously you just try to go to work everyday and do your best…if things like this happen then it gives you a boost of confidence that you must be doing something right, and it’s really pleasing and satisfying.”

Having turned professional in 2003, Walker established himself as a coach at the Pete Cowen Golf Academy in Rotherham, England. There he has assisted Cowen with some of his top players, whilst also taking players on in his own right from 2010.

Walker currently coaches the likes of Danny Willett, US Amateur, British Masters, Nordea Masters and DP World Tour Championship winner, Mathew Fitzpatrick, and 2016 BMW PGA Championship Winner, Chris Wood, and spends the majority of his time travelling with his players on the European and PGA Tours.

“What has driven me forward in coaching is an obsession for golf technique – being brutally honest it’s for selfish reasons to begin with, but then when you don’t manage it yourself [as a player] the people you are actually teaching become the vehicle to do the same thing – it’s really just an obsession with the topic.”

For More Information On All of 2016’s Award Winners Visit http://eur.pe/2016AnnualCongress

His players have achieved over 20 tournament victories between them and he has worked with seven Ryder Cup players in total and in Willett, Fitzpatrick and Wood, coached 3 of the players on the European team in the 2016 Ryder Cup.

Along with his Ryder Cup team members, 2016 was particularly successful for Walker, most notably with Danny Willett winning his first major championship, becoming the first British player to win at Augusta National for 20 years.

Walker has worked with Mathew Fitzpatrick from an early age, during which time he has gone on to become World Amateur number one and graduated on to the Professional ranks where he continues to make waves.

Much of Walker’s success can be attributed to the mentorship and help of Pete Cowen, who began by coaching Walker during his playing career but latterly was the catalyst for sending him down a coaching path:

“I was extremely privileged to work with Pete – I had one of the best coaches in the world on tap. I wouldn’t be receiving this award if it wasn’t for Pete – it’s that simple, I owe him a lot.

“A lot of coaches keep their cards to their chest but Pete keeps renewing your interest. What I most enjoy is talking technique and hitting balls with him, comparing ideas, seeing what players do with him, and with me, what works, and what doesn’t – it’s constantly stimulating your interest and it’s a fortunate position to be in.”

Two-time Masters Champion and 2015 Charles Schwab Cup winner, Bernhard Langer, is the recipient of the 2015 PGAs of Europe Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his outstanding achievements in golf, topping-off a fantastic year for the German professional.

Langer has been held in legend status for many years since being one of the ‘big five’ of European golf in the 1980s, a figurehead of the sport in his native homeland, and one of the most consistent and resilient professionals to have ever played the game.

“I am so honoured and blessed to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from the PGAs of Europe,” said Langer during his acceptance speech shown at the Annual Gala Awards Dinner at Gloria Hotels & Resorts in Turkey. “I also want to congratulate all of the 21,000+ Professionals across the PGAs of Europe’s membership for what [they] do…and I really appreciate what the PGAs of Europe is doing for the game.

Hailing from Bavaria in Germany, Langer turned professional in 1972 – eight years later he became a winner on the European Tour with the Dunlop Masters title, the first of 40 European Tour wins and 98 professional wins in total to date. His Masters victories came in 1985 and 1993 at Augusta National and became the world’s first number one player shortly after that first major in 1986 when the Official World Golf Rankings were introduced.

More recently Langer has been a record-breaking stalwart of the Champions Tour earning five senior major championship wins since joining the tour in 2007, and earned 13 top-10 finishes in 2015 on his way to his second consecutive Charles Schwab Cup, also becoming the first player to win it three times in their career.

Whilst his individual victories were numerous he has also been a prolific team player representing Team Europe on no less than 10 occasions in the Ryder Cup, and also captained the team to a record 18½-9½ victory over the United States at Oakland Hills Country Club in 2004, receiving world-wide acclaim and an honorary OBE.

The Hall of Famer was also quick to recognise the influence that PGA Professionals have had on his extensive career:

“[PGA Professionals] have been extremely important in my life – I was very fortunate to meet Heinz Fehring at the young age of 15 – he was like a second father to me – and taught me not just golf-related stuff, but also things I needed to learn about life and character. Then I met Willy Hoffman who has become my swing coach and golf coach over the last 40 years and helped me a great deal. They both are still very good friends of mine.”

European Tour Member and PGA Professional, Paul Lawrie, has received the 5 Star Professional Award from the PGAs of Europe in recognition of his contribution to the profession over a wide range of areas of expertise and activity.

Lawrie was nominated by the PGA in Scotland and selected by the PGAs of Europe’s award selection committee based on his work and representation as a PGA Professional, his work in developing the Paul Lawrie Foundation, along with his playing successes across the years, and was acknowledged for his award at the Association’s Gala Awards Dinner at Gloria Hotels & Resorts in Turkey.

“I’d like to thank everyone at the PGA in Scotland for nominating me,” explained Lawrie, who received the award at the PGA of Great Britain & Ireland’s Annual Lunch shortly after the Annual Congress. “I learned a tremendous amount in my early days in the PGA from Sandy Jones and Peter Lloyd on the role of not only a Club Professional but how to be a successful touring professional.”

Lawrie began his PGA training in 1986 and subsequently joined the European Tour in 1992 where he has since taken seven titles, most recently the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles in 2012. He has also had two appearances in the European Ryder Cup Team, along with perhaps his crowning glory of a major championship with his Open Championship win at Carnoustie in 1999.

But his tournament play was not the only reason he was selected by the committee – as the PGA of Scotland would attest to, Lawrie has never forgotten his roots having worked hard to develop elements of both the amateur and professional games.

Lawrie has developed a golf centre in his name, supported the Ladies Tartan Tour in Scotland, but perhaps most significantly created the Paul Lawrie Foundation in 2001. His foundation aims to get as many young people playing golf and enjoying it, with aspirations to create the touring professionals of the future. The Foundation has steadily grown over time developing a number of programmes, and has been supported by the Ryder Cup European Development Trust along the way.

“I’d also like to thank the Ryder Cup European Development Trust for being a massive part of our Foundation, which has been on the go since 2001 and teaches kids not only about golf, but about how to behave, speak and how to play; it’s all extremely important.”

The Foundation also supports a number of Professionals in the UK playing on tours such as the Ladies European Tour, Challenge Tour, and Euro Pro Tour, and Lawrie himself has continued to support the Ladies Tartan Tour and various PGA in Scotland events, in particular the Paul Lawrie Invitational played since 2011 giving young Professionals, top amateurs and seasoned campaigners a quality tournament with a significant prize fund.

“Through all of these contributions to the game of golf, Paul has proven himself to be a role model for golfers of all ages and both genders,” stated the PGA in Scotland as part of their nomination. “We are proud to support his nomination for the PGAs of Europe 5-Star Professional Award and wish him and his Foundation continued success in the future as well.”

World leader in sports, fashion and media, IMG, has received the PGAs of Europe’s Christer Lindberg Bowl in recognition of the company’s services to golf across the past 50 years.

The IMG business has its beginnings firmly set in golf having begun with a handshake between founder, Mark McCormack, and golfing legend, Arnold Palmer, when McCormack took on the management and marketing of Palmer in 1960, laying the groundwork for sports marketing as we know it today.

“We’re hugely appreciative – it’s very clearly for the organisation and I am deeply honoured to be the one who’s lucky enough to be here, but it is genuinely for all the people who work within golf,” said IMG’s Global Head of Golf, Guy Kinnings, who collected the award at the Association’s Annual Gala Awards Dinner supported by Rolex at Gloria Hotels & Resorts in Turkey.

“Everything we do is built around largely the professional game; we’ve managed the players and done that for many years and we’ve now moved into event staging…For us none of that would be happening if it wasn’t for PGA Professionals – the relationship between the players and the pros that teach them and bring them to the game is essential and similarly for us we’re about growing the game.”

IMG’s golfing history rapidly evolved after Mark McCormack’s realisation of the commercial potential of sport. His promotion of the ‘big three’ of Palmer, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus was the catalyst for its evolution into the world’s premier sports and lifestyle marketing and management company – with a portfolio of hundreds of sports figures, models, entertainers, celebrities, television properties, artists, musicians, writers, prestigious organisations and world-wide events.

IMG Golf has grown to become a ‘gateway into the golf lifestyle’ working with top players, securing top licensing deals and endorsements, designing courses and managing/owning over 30 of the world’s leading golf events.

The work IMG has done across those various areas of the sport has helped to develop it to a commercial level that many will have thought impossible. As an organisation, IMG has become a hugely successful global leader that now services many sports and other industries. But in its success, it has also helped golf to expand to the far corners of the world and generate interest and revenue that has helped the sport grow making the industry stronger for all.

“The company itself has completely changed and we’ve got an astonishingly dynamic management and they are taking the company into different areas that we never imagined,” added Kinnings. “We’re proud to work with the players and the tournaments that we do, but we now try and be involved in almost every aspect of the sport, whether that’s working with Federations, brands that support the game, academies, junior programmes. Hopefully the game will be in pretty good health in the years to come and that’s certainly something we want to see.”

Manchip Earns Top European Coaching Award in Name of John Jacobs http://www.pgae.com/news/manchip-earns-top-european-coaching-award-in-name-of-john-jacobs/ Mon, 21 Dec 2015 12:24:56 +0000 PGAs of Europe http://www.pgae.com/?p=13640 Golfing Union of Ireland National Coach, Neil Manchip, has been given the John Jacobs Award for Teaching & Coaching at the PGAs of Europe’s 2015 Annual Congress]]>

Golfing Union of Ireland National Coach, Neil Manchip, has been given the John Jacobs Award for Teaching & Coaching at the PGAs of Europe’s 2015 Annual Congress Gala Awards.

The John Jacobs Award is given to a PGA Professional that has excelled in the field of coaching be it with any type of player, elite or beginner, and since 2011 it has been awarded to coaches such as Rory McIlroy’s coach, Michael Bannon, and Spain’s Salvador Luna in 2014.

Manchip’s nomination came from the PGA in Ireland where he has been a prominent member and influential coach in the careers of many of Ireland’s top amateur and professional players, notably the European Tour’s Shane Lowry.

“I’m really fortunate to be in their [the players] company,” said Manchip during a Q&A with PGAs of Europe Education Committee Chairman, Jonathan Mannie (pictured below, right), at the Annual Gala Awards Dinner at Gloria Hotels & Resorts in Turkey where he received his accolade. “They’re excellent golfers – I’m national coach and help them out with their programmes, help them with their golf and give them some guidance in all areas, and it’s just great to be in there to see them develop and thrive.

“I feel really excited to win an award in the name of John Jacobs…it’s just brilliant having grown up with him as such an idol as a golf teacher – I’m just so excited to be here and win the award.”

Manchip started his PGA training in 1992 at the world-famous Royal County Down Golf Club and subsequently became the Head Professional of Royal Dublin, before taking the position of National Coach with the Golfing Union of Ireland.

During his time there he has been involved in the development of all senior and boys amateur teams in Ireland, many of which have had international success along the way. Amongst those players have been five members of the recently victorious 2015 Walker Cup Team, including Paul Dunne who also faired well at this year’s Open Championship, as well as the aforementioned Shane Lowry.

Since 2005 Manchip and Lowry have worked together forming a successful partnership that has led Lowry to multiple wins, such as the Irish Open, the Portugal Masters and, most recently, the WGC Bridgestone Invitational earlier in 2015.

“My main job with Shane Lowry is to help him realise his potential,” explained Manchip. “It is not a matter of being an instructor, but much more of being a listener. I help him to be aware of himself, and what he is doing without being judgmental…The National Coaching role can be somewhat different, in that I am dealing with squads of 12 players in several age groups. We have a wonderful volunteer network who help with logistics, selection and planning. We also have other provincial coaches, along with Professionals who help with strength and conditioning, club-fitting, nutrition and physiotherapy.”

Aegean Ace, Vassilakis, Earns PGAs of Europe Special Recognition Award http://www.pgae.com/news/aegean-ace-vassilakis-earns-pgas-of-europe-special-recognition-award/ Mon, 21 Dec 2015 12:14:09 +0000 PGAs of Europe http://www.pgae.com/?p=13631 Executive Chairman and President of Aegean Airlines S.A., Theodore Vassilakis, has received the PGAs of Europe Special Recognition Award at the Association’s An]]>

Executive Chairman and President of Aegean Airlines S.A., Theodore Vassilakis, has received the PGAs of Europe Special Recognition Award at the Association’s Annual Gala Awards Dinner at Gloria Hotels & Resorts in Turkey.

The award is given each year to an individual that has done much to promote golf and the activities of the PGAs of Europe, and the head of the company voted best regional airline in 2015 is a thoroughly deserving winner.

“I feel very proud and I am very thankful to the PGAs of Europe,” said Vassilakis. “…Because after so many years they have recognised our contribution both as a person…and with the contribution of my companies.”

Vassilakis’ involvement in golf stems from his great love for the game and his introduction of the Aegean Airlines Pro-Am in 2006, along with his friendship with the late ‘Captain’ Vassilis Constantakopoulos who built the Costa Navarino resort in the Messinia region of Greece.

Golf has been a growing sport in Greece and the introduction of the PGAs of Europe-sanctioned Aegean Airlines Pro-Am was a huge step in bringing both amateur and professional golfers to the region to experience what the country has to offer.

Aegean Airlines has always been a strong supporter of the golf tourism market, with a dynamic role in the strategic development of Greek tourism in general. The Pro-Am has acted as a verification of Vassilakis and the company’s commitment to increasing the levels of tourism in the country by both aiding the logistics of getting people to the country and its courses, promoting the event and the game in general, supporting the national PGA and Federation, as well as helping in the development of the facilities available to golfers throughout the whole region.

In 2015 the Pro-Am reached its 10th anniversary and is now consistently sold-out in a matter of weeks; a key indicator that Vassilakis’ passion for golf and the event has helped the sport to grow in the country and will continue to do so in the future.

“For the event to have reached such a milestone is a huge feat,” said PGAs of Europe Chief Executive Ian Randell, during the 10th anniversary of the Pro-Am earlier in 2015. “It is a product of a vast amount of effort from Mr Vassilakis and his Aegean Airlines team and their dedication to the sport has proven itself across the past decade.”

Vassilakis and his team certainly do not plan to rest on their laurels when it comes to growing the sport. Building on the legacy of the aforementioned Vassilis Constantakopoulos, and now working with his son, Achilleas Constantakopoulos, there are big plans ahead:

“For us golf is a new thing in Greece but along with my friend, Captain Vassilis Constantakopoulos, we have started ‘scouting’ for golf in Greece,” added Vassilakis.

“We are now in the stages of being proud of what we have done and we won’t stop there. We are going to make another effort in making an excellent country club next to Athens. We have finished the master plans and are at the end of acquiring the land that we want, so we are looking at the future with optimism.”
